Application of z-test/t-test

1. The college students in a university go through an average of 500

disposable cups in a year with a standard deviation of 42 cups. To raise
environmental awareness, a student group at a large university
volunteered to help count how many cups were used by students on
their campus. A random sample of 50 students’ results found that they
used a mean of 476. At a 0.01, is there sufficient evidence to conclude
that the mean differs from 500?
2. The average salary for public school teachers for a specific year was
reported to be greater than P39,385. A random sample of 30 public
school teachers in a particular region had a mean of P41,680, and the
population standard deviation is P5975. Is there sufficient evidence at
the 0.05 level to conclude that the mean salary is greater than
P39,385?
3. The amount of coffee dispensed by a vending machine is assumed to
be approximately normally distributed. A vendor claims that the mean
amount of coffee dispensed by the machine is 6 ounces per cup. The
office manager doubted his claim. He randomly selected 25 cups of
coffee from this machine and recorded the amount of coffee
dispensed in each. The sample mean was 5.8 ounces with a standard
deviation of 0.8 ounces. Do the data provided sufficient evidence to
indicate that the mean amount of coffee dispensed is less than 6
ounces per cup? Test the hypothesis at α = 0.05 and d.f. = 16.
