Product Link™ Legacy Satellite and Cellular Reference Guide

Note: This reference guide contains general information about the Product Link™
Legacy satellite and cellular telematics systems. It is intended for use by a
technician with little or no telematics experience. This document will illustrate
system components and configuration as an introduction.
Legacy Satellite System Overview
1. Satellite PL121SR (radio only)
a. Provides basic information: location and machine hours
2. Satellite PL321SR (PL121SR radio and PL300 ECM)
a. Provides additional information as it interfaces with machine data link
3. Satellite PL321VSR (PL121SR radio and PL300 VIMS ECM)
a. Also integrates with VIMS (Vital Information Management System)
b. VIMS PL300 ECM is virtually identical to a non-VIMS PL300 except for its
software files. Refer to Caterpillar Service Information System for each
machine’s unique software files if flash is needed
Legacy Cellular System Overview (included here to avoid confusion)
1. The cellular PL522 or PL523 ECM is virtually identical to a PL300 ECM
2. Cellular PL522 (ECM and radio in one ECM)
a. Provides additional information as it interfaces with machine data link
b. Easily identified via “shark fin” antenna
3. Cellular PL523 (ECM and radio in one ECM)
a. Also integrates with VIMS (Vital Information Management System)
b. Easily identified via “shark fin” antenna

Satellite System Variants

1. Product Link PL121SR system
a. “Analog” PL121SR radio part # 263-9088
b. “Digital” PL121SR radio part # 336-3545
c. These PL121SR’s radios are virtually
identical

 2. Product Link PL321SR system
Note: The PL321SR system incorporates the same PL121SR components as explained
above, with the addition of an Electronic Control Module (ECM) and two additional
harnesses.
Note: Additional harnesses may be required for machine specific applications, not
covered here

 Legacy Cellular System PL52X Variants (included here to avoid confusion)
The Product Link Legacy Cellular PL522 (part # 351-8490) and PL523 (part # 351-8492)
were designed to share the same footprint as the PL300 ECM. The radio is internal. Be
sure that you are addressing the correct device.
