SPEAKING TEST

GEP 6
Part 1: You will have to talk about the topic for 1 minute. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
Part 2: Take your side. Discuss this topic with your partner in 2 minutes.

SET 1
Describe an important conversation that you had with someone.
I would like to share with you one of the most important conversations I had with my
teacher about my choice of university.

To be honest, at that time, I was so confused by a lot of choices. If I chose the wrong
one, I would waste a lot of time and efforts.

It was the first time I have had to make big decision, I came to meet my homeroom
teacher for some advice because she had a lot of experience in every field. After listens
attentively to my explanation, she smiled and calmed me down by saying that she thought
that I could meet their requirements and I shouldn’t worry too much about failure, just try
to work hard to reach the goal I set.

This conversation was interesting to me because she gave me useful advice and helped
me calm down. Then, I got a satisfying result for my application and now I’m here as a
student of uef university.

To have a successful conversation, it is important that the two speakers

share the same opinions on what they are discussing. To what extent do
you agree or disagree? Give reasons and examples to support your view.

Hương: Hi Ngân! I have a

controversial statement that I
would love to discuss with you
today.
“When people succeed, it is
because of hard work. Luck has
nothing to do with success.” Do
you agree or disagree with the
statement above?
Ngân: Oh, that's a tough question!
I think I disagree with the above
statement. Because, if you
try hard but you are not lucky, you
will never succeed
H ng: ươ Why do you think so?
Ngân: It is not simply that the
ancients have a saying "The fate is
under God's will". I'll give
you a few examples. Firstly, there
have been many cases where
students studied very hard, but
on the day of the exam, there were
problems leading to failure.
Second, there are people who do
nothing but win the lottery by luck.
So try to ask if there is no luck,
success?
Hương: I disagree with your
opinion. You are ignoring all the
hard-working efforts to reach the
success of hard workers. If you're
lucky and you're lazy, you'll never
succeed. And if you work
hard, success will surely come to
you. Hard work is the most
important and essential stage to
succeed in life.
Ngân: What is there to prove it?
Hương: For example, when
interviewing, employers will
choose someone who says "I am a
hard
worker, I will definitely bring
results to the company", they will
never choose someone who says
"I am a lucky person, I am a lucky
person. will bring luck to the
company". Success will be
meaningful if it is your effort and
hard work. Luck is a very small
factor 1 percent, maybe none,
the remaining 99 percent, the most
important factor is still hard work.
Therefore, I totally agree
with the statement above
Ngân: Our thoughts are so different
Hương: No problem. Everyone has
their own opinion. I respect it,
respect your opinion.
Goodbye. See you later.

SET 2

Describe a time when you felt very lucky or unlucky

Everyone will have bad luck at some point in their life, and so do I. Even
now, when I look back, I still feel shy and regretful of my actions

I remember exactly when I was in 12th grade, and I studied at a boarding

school, it mean that all students can’t afford to bring cell phones into the
school. But that was the time after I got covid , had to stay at home and
routinely use phone at this time. So after I had to go back to school, I thought it
would be boring if I couldn't use my phone anymore.

So I had a very stupid thought: hide my phone and bring it to school.

Everything was going well until one day when I was using my phone in my bed
without noticing the teacher standing behind me. She found out and confiscated
my phone. Then she gave it back to my mother.

The thing that made me feel unlucky was not because my teach found out,
but because I made her and my mother feel sad and disappointed about me.It
was not only bad luck but also a lesson for me about honesty

When people succeed, it is entirely because of hard work. Luck has nothing
to do with their success. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the
statement? Give reasons and examples to support your view.
H: Hi Phương .What r u doing?
P: Hello Hân, I’m following a topic is controversial
H: Oh! That's interesting, may i know what it's about

SET 3
Describe a time when you or your acquaintance had to see a doctor.
Since I was a kid until now, I have to see to the doctor a lot, but it surely not very happy memories.
So I concluded that the doctor who made me feel the least pain was the dermatologist.

It was the time when I took the final exam. I had exam pressure and constantly use fastfood so my
skin became very bad. It is filled with various types of acne and make me feel not confident.
Luckily, my mom found out early o and she took me to a big dermatology hospital. The doctor
concluded that my condition was mainly caused by diet and lifestyle so it was not too difficult to treat.
And she gave me a skin treatment for 2 months

That means I have to go to bed on time, not eat fast foods, and spicy foods, and use products that
the doctor gave me. Fortunately, less than 2 months, my skin has improved. I was extremely happy and
satisfied with their service, and at the same time very grateful for my mother's concern and the doctor's
dedication during my treatment.

Some people claim that prevention is better than cure. To what extent do you agree or
disagree with this claim? Give reasons and examples to support your view.
H: Hi Phương .What r u doing?
P: Hello Hân, I’m following a topic is controversial
H: Oh! That's interesting, may i know what it's about
P: Of course, now on social media, people are talking about topic:" prevention is better than cure ". What do u
thing ab it ?
H: In my view, I totally agree with the statement above. Because first, health has its limits.Second, the cost of
medical care today is very expensive. So if we know how to protect our health, it will be better than
waiting for an illness to be treated.
H: For example, when the Covid epidemic happened, if we do not prevent the disease, the consequences are
very unpredictable, even if we have a lot of money, we will not be able to save our health.
P: I do not think so. Because prevention will easily lead to a lot of anxiety that makes people's psyches
unstable. They will always live in fear
P: For example, drinking ginger to prevent Covid, but the truth is not like that, it also causes heat and sore
throat, affecting the health of the people who do that. I completely disagree with the above.
H: I think it's because they prevent the disease in the wrong way. But it's okay, everyone has their own
opinion, I respect your views.Goodbye. See you later
P: Okay. Bye

SET 4
Describe an old and wise person that you know.
Today I’d like to tell you about my grandmother who is a wise person, in my opinion.

My grandmother is in mid-70s. She has a good sense of humour. Whenever I drop by, she
usually tells me a joke that made me laugh so hard. She’s also a good listener. I always tell to
her so that I can relieve stress . She just listens attentively and rarely advises me what to do. I
enjoy spending time with her as I feel so relaxed.
Her calmness really amazed me. She is always calm in all situations. There was once between
her and her friend were misunderstanding, the woman kept cursing at my grandmother but she
was just trying to reassure her friend and make peace.

And because of these things, my grandmother is someone I really admire.

Part 2: Take your side. Discuss this topic with your partner in 2 minutes.

Nowadays, young people often send their aging parents to nursing homes. Do you think this is a
positive or negative trend? Give examples to support your view.
H: Hi Phương .What r u doing?
P: Hello Hân, I’m following a topic is controversial
H: Oh! That's interesting, may i know what it's about
P: Of course, now on social media, people are talking about topic: " young people often send their parents to
nursing homes ". What do u thing ab it ?
H: First of all, due to work pressure and modern lifestyle, young people have to work excessively long hours.
They don't have enough time to take care of their parents, making them lonely. If they are in a nursing
home, they will have friends to talk to. Second, in nursing homes, there are full medical types of
equipment to monitor health care.
P: No, I don’t think so. I get annoyed when someone do that.Because in my opinion, first, nursing homes
couldn't be better than home. Secondly, When we were young, our parents also had to work a lot but still
took time to take care of us. Why can't we do that when our parents are old?
H: I don’t agree with you. Your thinking is too negative.
P: I’m sorry if I am being sensitive on this matter. But this is my personal opinion. I understand everyone has
their own opinion, their own choice and I respect it too.
H: it's ok . see u later
P: Okay. Goodbye

Part 1: You will have to talk about the topic for 1 minute. You can make some notes to help you if you
wish.

Describe a memorable trip in your life.

You should say:
● when the trip took place
● where the event took place
● what happened during the trip
and explain why this trip was memorable for you.
Weather is always hot in summers, that is why many people choose to escape the heat by going to
somewhere cold such as Da Lat, so do i. last summer I had had a great chance to go to Da Lat with my
friends on my vacation.

To me, the weather there was so perfect, it was still always cold during that summer. The atmosphere
there was very clean and fresh, which made me feel very comfortable. .

It's a 3 day - 2 night trip. firs day, We went to Lang Biang- one of the greatest tourists attraction in Da Lat

Especially, Da Lat had a night market, always crowded with customers, where people can buy food,
flowers, or any stuff they want. I had gone there and buy many gifts for my family.

It was an unforgettable trip, I was quite upset that I could not stay there for a long time, but I hoped I still
can visit Da Lat whenever I have time
Part 2: Take your side. Discuss this topic with your partner in 2 minutes.

Recently, while young people often consider backpacking as a thrilling way to travel, parents only
see dangers out of this trend. Do you think the advantages of backpacking outweigh the
disadvantages? Give examples to support your view.
H: Hi Phương .What r u doing?
P: Hello Hân, I’m following a topic is controversial
H: Oh! That's interesting, may i know what it's about
P: Of course, now on social media, people are talking about topic: " while young people often consider
backpacking travel, parents only see dangers out of this trend ". What do u thing ab it ?
H: I think in this regard, I will choose to support the opinion of the parents
P: You made me surprised with this thought. Why do you think so?
H: Because in my opinion, parents think that is completely right. Because backpacking has a lot of risks.
Firstly, it is very easy to get into a car accident. Second, they can be robbed,... Parents are always the ones
who love and care the most for their children, so I trust their intuition
P: I don’t think so. It is because parents worry too much about their children. They have not yet seen the
benefits of backpacking
H: Really??
P: Yes. There are so many benefits. Firstly, you can gain new knowledge from the outside world. Secondly,
Backpacking lets you discover many different cultures to have a different view of life
H: Sorry but I don’t think so, You have a very positive mindset. Why don't you think there's any
disadvantage?
P: just an experience to grow up
H: Our thoughts are so different
P: No problem. Everyone has their own opinion, I respect it, respect your opinion. Goodbye. See you later.
H: Okay. Bye. See you again

Part 1: You will have to talk about the topic for 1 minute. You can make some notes to help you if you
wish.

Describe an environmental problem in your city.

You should say:
● what the problem is
● what has caused the problem
● what effects it has on the city
and suggest solutions to the problem.
I live in HCM city and this city has got some several issues related to environmental pollution.
There are two main reasons is water pollution and air pollution.

The main reason for this problem is overpopulation of this city. It is easy to understand that a
large number of populations in a small city always cause pollution as they consume more energy
and natural resources and create more wastages

The reason for water pollution is the factories and industries produce a large number of chemical
and other wastages which directly affects the water. A large number of people rely on the water of
the rivers and they would be directly affected and those diseases can become epidemics if not
controlled

Air pollution is also very concerning in this city . Air pollution is the direct reason people suffer
from various dangerous diseases including lung cancer, asthma, heart disease etc.

The most important thing to reduce pollution in our city is to create public awareness.Education is
the most important factors that help people understand the necessity of keeping the city clean and
healthy.
Part 2: Take your side. Discuss this topic with your partner in 2 minutes.
Plastic bags should be banned completely to help protect the environment. To what extent do you
agree or disagree? Give examples to support your view.

H: Hi Phuong, what are u doing?

P: Hello Hân, I’m following a topic is controversial
H: Oh! That’s interesting, may I know what it’s about
P: Of course, now on social media, people are talking about topic: "Plastic bags should be banned
completely to help protect the environment’. What do u thing ab it ?
H: I totally agree because plastic bags pose a major threat to the environment in most country. First, they
pollute soild and water enviroment. Second, they will produce dioxins, furans, which pollute the air, cause
poisoning, affect endocrine glands, reduce immunity, cause cancer... You can see the terrible harm plastic
causes to the environment even affects people.
P: Omg, it's terrible but using plastic bags is not bad just because humans make it harmful. You should
throwing garbage in the right place to environmental protection . Instead of banning the use of plastic
bags, there should be a law that fined the people who litter and pollute the environment. That would be
better.
H: As I mentioned above, there are toxic subtances that can harm human health.
P: It is all because of humans over using plastic bags. we should use at the right time to get best effect
H: Our thoughts are so diffierent. This is an fascinating topic, and it has been quite benefitcial to me.Thank
u for the talking time w me about that.
P:It's ok. We will talk again later. Have a nice day. See u later
SET 7

wish.

Describe an activity you have done to keep fit.

You should say:
● what kind of activity it is
● what you do exactly
● how long you have done this activity
and explain why it can help you keep fit.
I do a lot of things to stay healthy such as morning walk, yoga, cycling and so on but here I would like to
talk about the morning walk.

Every day I get up early in the morning and go for morning walk with my grandfather, who is 85. He told
me that he has never missed his morning walk in his life.In fact his secret of good health is the morning
walk.I joined him about a year ago and since then I do it everyday

My grandfather and I both wear our track suits and walking shoes while walking.During our walk, my
grandpa tells me a lot of stories. it makes me feel interesting

Morning walk has a lot of benefits. It also improves the blood circulation and good for all age groups.
So a morning walk is the activity which I do to stay healthy.
Part 2: Take your side. Discuss this topic with your partner in 2 minutes.
Some people think that working out at the gym is more effective than working out at home.
To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give examples to support your view.

H: Oh! That’s interesting, may I know what it’s about
P: Of course, now on social media, people are talking about topic: "working out at the gym is more

H: That’s tough topic. In my opinion, working at gym is more effective because at gym it will be easier to
chosse exercises related to exercises machines that are not available at home.
P: This is good point but when u w at home. U can feel more comfortable, u can buy ropes or exercise
mats to jump rope or do yoga exercises that u are also very healthy and comfortable.
H: I know what u’re saying but what do u think about gym enviroment? There are sth about being gym,
meet professional bodybuilders and lots of people, that give u a motivation and a boost. We often draw
energy from others and it can push us to work harder.
P: I don’t think so. For example, I feel compeletely satisfied watching at workout videos on Youtube and
following them. You will also feel comfortable that no one is watching and prying as you work out. They
also give me a lot of motivation too. It’s not just a gym that helps us exercise better.
H: Our thoughts are so diffierent. This is an fascinating topic, and it has been quite benefitcial to me.Thank

I would like to share with you one of the most important conversations I had with my
teacher about my choice of university.

To be honest, at that time, I was so confused by a lot of choices. If I chose the wrong
one, I would waste a lot of time and efforts. After thinking carefully, I had chosen UEF
university because that I was impressed with their teaching approach, but I'm worried that I
can’t afford to be accepted.

It was the first time I have had to make big decision, I came to meet my homeroom
teacher for some advice because she had a lot of experience in every field. After listening
carefully to my explanation, she smiled and calmed me down by saying that she thought
that I could meet their requirements and I shouldn’t worry too much about failure, just try
to work hard to reach the goal I set.

This conversation was interesting to me because she gave me useful advice and helped
me calm down. Then, I got a satisfying result for my application and now I’m here as a
student of uef university.

and explain why you find this cultural event interesting.
I would like to talk about the Lunar New Year festival, also known as the Tet holiday, which is the
occasion expected the most by Vietnamese people every year

The most popular things that people do this festival is that people who work and study in big cities would
go back to their hometown to celebrate the new year with their families and relatives. Another thing that
we usually do is that we give children some “lucky money” with the hope that it will bring fortune to
those kids.

The new year festival is so important to all Vietnamese citizens because we get more time to spend with
our families . It is also a great time to think about what we have done in the previous year, and to make
plans for the upcoming year.
so, to have a new year full of good lucks, we have to prepare carefully for the most enjoyable festival.
