FST 559 UNIT OPERATION

TITLE MEASUREMENT OF EQUIVALENT RADIUS, BULK

DENSITY AND SOLID DENSITY OF GRANULAR
MATERIALS
NAME AHMAD ZIEN ZAKHQWAN BIN JIMI

GROUP AS2463A

INSTRUCTOR’S NAME DR SITI SUHARA BINTI RAMLI

Objective

To measure the equivalent radius, bulk density, and solid density of granular materials.

Background and Summary

Granular is material that composed of grain or particle of solid. The smaller grain can be identified
as the powder. The solid density is known as density of the grain. The density of certain material is
very important as it determine whether the material will float or sink or contain air or not. Bulk
density defined as mass divided by total volume occupied by the material. The volume trapped
between the particles is known as porosity.

We started this experiment by counted all red beans green beans and soy bean until the correct
amount. The we weight all the granular materials. After that we put water in measuring cylinder and
then put granular material into the measuring cylinder then record the data.

Apparatus & Materials

Materials Apparatus
Red Beans 100 mL measuring cylinder
Green Beans 50 mL measuring cylinder
Soy Beans Analytical Balance
Cooking Oil

Procedure

1. The weight of 400 numbers of bean was counted weighed and recorded.
2. The beans were placed in 100 mL measuring cylinder A. The reading of cylinder was
recorded.
3. A certain amount of cooking oil was measured into a 50 mL measuring cylinder B. The initial
reading of the cylinder B was recorded
4. The cooking oil was poured into measuring cylinder A until all the beans were submerged in
oil. The final reading of cylinder B was recorded.
5. Volume of oil that is poured into measuring cylinder B, v=(v1-v2) mL

Discussion

As the experiment goes, we determined certain that need to be consider as it will disturb our result
at the end. The first thing that need to be considered is the pan balance. The reading must be slightly
inaccurate as the pan balance has no cap to hold the wind from room. So, the result might be slightly
over or less than the actual value.

Other than that, our experiment carried with accurate procedure. We use the right number of
granular materials as stated and all the procedure was conducted as by the book.

Conclusion

The equivalent radius, bulk density, and solid density of granular materials were obtained.

Measurement of the equivalent radius, bulk density, and solid density of granular materials were
obtained.
