LITERARY ANALYSIS
 Introduction
o I chose ‘Catch the moon’ written by Judith Ortiz Cofer
o In short, this short story tells us the story of Luis, a boy who suffers
from the loss of his mother and helps his father at his job, here he
meets Naomi, a girl who attracts him to unimaginable levels.
o Judith Ortiz Cofer (February 24, 1952 - December 30, 2016) was a
Puerto Rican American writer who now lives in Georgia. Her Puerto
Rican Heritage explains the many Hispanic characters in her literary
works.
o I will talk about the characters, the mood, the imagery, and the
theme of the story.

o Main Characters:
 Luis Cintró n: His mother died of cancer and was in the
juvenile correspondent. He is the protagonist of this story.
 Naomi: She is the girl Luis falls in love with when he goes to
Mr. Cintron's shop to fix the hubcap of her car.
o Secondary Characters:
 Mr. Cintró n: He is the father of Luis (the main character) and
the owner of the hubcaps.
 Kenny Matoa: He is a boy who belongs to the Tiburó n Gang.
 Mrs. Laguna: He is the mathematics teacher of our
protagonist.

o The mood of this story is sad and emotional to say the least, as we
see the pain of two people who have lost their mother and wife
respectively.

 Conclusion
o The theme of the story is the idea of a diamond in the rough. Luis
seems like a really bad kid at the beginning, but throughout the story
we see him transform to try and make himself a better person by
searching and organizing all the hubcaps. The author is trying to
show that it is never too late to start over or fix your mistakes.

o The characters influence the theme in a positive way since there is a
coherent reason that explains why Luis becomes the bad guy, the
image and the mood fit perfectly with the theme of the story, to give
a more somber aspect to the story and thus achieve that emotional,
sad and melancholic mood that the story has.
