DEVELOPMENTAL CLASS LESSON TEMPLATE

NAME: Group 2 – Adrianna Hahner, Shelby Langvardt, Mandy Marchesini, JJ Oden

GRADE(S): P-K
TOPIC: Kindness
DATE: February 24th, 2021

STANDARDS:
ASCA- PS: A2.8
KSDE- SE: 1.1.1, 1.2.2, 1.3.3

MATERIALS:
• Book: Making Friends is an Art! by Julia Cook
• Worksheet: “I am a good friend because…”
• Art supplies: crayons, markers, colored pencils
• Pipe cleaners

ACTIVITY:
1. Read specific pages from the book Making Friends is an Art! and stop to ask clarifying
questions throughout the read-aloud. Examples of pages and questions may include: (5
minutes)
a. Page 2 describes how all people are different.
b. Page 3 describes someone who is feeling left out. “How could you help them feel
better?
c. Page 4-5 describes ways that people can be kind to one another. “What are some
other ways that you can be kind?”
2. Pass around the pipe cleaners to students. Instruct students to take three pipe cleaners
each for the activity. Students will “create a friend” out of the pipe cleaners. Students could
make a stick figure, a shape, an animal, etc. Allow students the freedom to create whatever
“friend” they would like to make. (10 minutes)
a. Tying the activity back to the book, repeat the line “We are all different, and some of
us are sharper than others, some of us are long and some of us are short”. This will
help the students feel creative when making their pipe cleaner “friends”.
3. Students will then role play scenarios with their pipe cleaner “friends”. Here are prompts
and scenarios that we will ask the students to role play: (10 minutes)
a. Earlier in the book, we saw that the brown crayon was feeling left out. What could
you say to your new friend to help cheer them up?
b. Pretend that you saw your new friend fall at recess. How would you make them feel
better?

c. The blue crayon in the book gives a lot of hugs when people are feeling down. Your
pipe cleaner friend is crying because they feel sad today. What would you do to be a
kind friend?
d. Your friend is really excited that they finished their math worksheet! How would you
use kind words or actions to spread happiness?
4. Pass around the “I am a good friend because…” worksheet and art supplies. On the
worksheet, students will draw a picture of a way that they’ve been a good friend in the past.
The bottom line of the worksheet says, “I am a good friend because…” and students will
complete that sentence. (5 minutes)

EVALUATION:
• The evaluation will be based off the final activity:
students will draw a picture and explain why they are
a good friend. Questions throughout the lesson will
check for understanding and provide an informal
assessment.

ESTIMATED TIME: 30-minute lesson

SOURCE(S):
• Pipe cleaner activity was self-created by our group.
