 What have you noticed?
 What numbers belong to A? What these numbers represent to?

 What numbers belong to B? What these numbers represent to?
 What have you noticed in Events A and B?
 What the number in letter C represents?

Scenario: Rolling a die.

4.4 Abstraction

SAMPLE SPACE
25 mins.
In a mathematical experiment, the set of all possible outcomes is called
sample space and is denoted by S.
Example: Rolling a die.
S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
Cardinality of a set contains the number of elements in the sample space. It is
denoted as n(S).

EVENT

An event is a collection of outcomes and a subset of a sample space.

Example: Based on a Venn Diagram above, there are three events A, B, and C.
 A represents that the number is odd,
 B represents that the number is a multiple of 3, and
 C represents that the number is a multiple of 4.

Question: What elements common to A and B?

The element is 3.

UNION OF TWO EVENTS

The union of two events, A OR B, can be written as A ∪ B. These are

the elements found in event A, event B, or in both A and B.

Illustration:

Example: Rolling a die. (Refer to the Venn diagram at the top.)

What is A ∪ B?

A = {1, 3, 5}
B = {3, 6}
A ∪ B = {1, 3, 5, 6}

INTERSECTION OF TWO EVENTS

The intersection of two events, A AND B, written as A ∩ B. These are

the elements found to both events A and B.

Illustration:

Example: Rolling a die. (Refer to the Venn diagram at the top.)

A = {1, 3, 5}
B = {3, 6}
A ∩ B = {3}

Directions: Divide the class into two groups. Provide the groups with a
scenario/problem and assign each group with different tasks to complete.
Problem:
4.5 Application If event A is letters from the word MARBLE and event B contains all
the VOWELS,
Given:
Event A = {M, A, R, B, L, E}
10 mins.
Event B = {A, E, I, O, U}

Group 1: Illustrate events A and B, A ∪ B, and A ∩ B through a Venn Diagram.

Group 2: Find the following:

a. universal set
b. A ∪ B
c. A ∩ B

Example: U = {A, B, C, ...}

4.6 Assessment

Direction: Use the Venn Diagram below to answer the

following questions.

10 mins.

Test

1. What are the members of the universal set?

2. What are the members of event A?

3. What are the members of event B?

4. List the members that intersect.

5. What members are in the universal set but not a

member event A nor B?
