One of the most effective ways
of reducing the risk of a
volcanic eruption is having an
evacuation plan. This involves
ensuring evacuation strategies
are in place along with
emergency shelter and food
supplies being planned for.
Based on monitoring data,
exclusion zones can be set up
to ensure people are evacuated
from areas likely to be affected
before an eruption.
Local people can also be
educated about actions they
can take to reduce the risk of
loss of life or injury. People are
taught that if they are unable to
be evacuated what they should
do to protect themselves, e.g.
go indoors to avoid falling ash

EARTHQUAKE PREPARATION
The actual movement of the ground
in an earthquake is seldom the
direct cause of death or injury. Most
casualties result from falling objects
and debris which is a result of the
earthquake shaking. The duration
and amount of shaking associated
with an earthquake as well as the
age and construction type of a
structure greatly determines the
amount of damage that may result.
Older structures built with little or no
seismic design will be the first
structures to be tested by an
earthquake. Earthquakes can also
cause secondary effects such as
fires, liquefaction and landslides.
While earthquakes most often occur
with little to no warning, there are
steps you can take to protect
yourself and your family. By taking
action today, you can reduce your
vulnerability to earthquakes that
may happen in the future. Find out

Step 1
Put latches on cabinet doors and file
cabinets. During an earthquake
doors and drawers can come open.
Place strong latches on your
cabinet's door and file cabinets to
keep them from opening and spilling
their contents on the floor causing
damage.
Step 2
Store hazardous materials in a
sturdy place. Mixing or spilling
chemicals can be dangerous. Make
sure that any hazardous products
are in their proper containers and
stored in a cabinet secured to a wall
with a strong latch.
Step 3
Keep fire extinguishers. Place them
throughout your home in the event
you need them. If a fire starts during
an earthquake having a fire
extinguisher nearby will help
minimize the damage.
Step 4
Fasten your water heater and other
appliances. Secure your water
heater to wall studs. Anchor your
appliances to the wall or floor to
prevent them from sliding or falling
over. Make sure that any appliance
connected to a gas pipe has pliable
tubing.
Step 5
Minimize your financial hardships by
organizing important documents,
strengthening your property, and
considering insurance.
TSUNAMI PREPARATION
Of all Earth's natural hazards,
tsunamis are among the most
infrequent. Major tsunamis do not
happen often, but when they do,
they can have a significant impact
on life and property. Even small
tsunamis, which are more frequent,
can cause loss of life, injuries, and
considerable damage.
Tsunami impacts can vary greatly
from one community to the next
depending on their local bathymetry
and topography. So to prepare for a
tsunami, coastal communities
should conduct hazard assessments
to understand how tsunamis of
different sizes and sources (location
and type) might affect them.
A hazard assessment includes using
computer models and information
from past tsunamis to identify and
map the areas likely to be flooded
during a tsunami and by how much.
Communities can use the resulting
tsunami hazard zone maps to
determine where people and other
important community assets (e.g.,
buildings, facilities, bridges, schools,
hospitals) are at risk so they can
decide where to focus preparedness,
response, and mitigation efforts.
Communities that understand their
tsunami risk are better prepared to
protect the public in the event of a
tsunami.
