The Art Movement in Europe: IMPRESSIONISM


Impressionism is a movement in painting that started in France in the 1860s. Impressionist artists paint with many colors and
their usual subjects are the outdoors to make more options in creating a scene; for example nature’s landscape.

IMPRESSIONISM IN MUSIC
It may be described generally as having refinement, delicacy and vagueness

CHARACTERISTICS OF IMPRESSIONISM IN MUSIC


1. Its rhythm is irregular in terms of phrases
2. It avoided the traditional harmonic progression
3. it has unresolved dissonance
4. it uses whole tone and 9th chord

Dissonance- lack of agreement

Harmonic progression (also called chord progression)- Chords are sounded relatively to each other
Example: In the key of C, relative chords are F and G

Whole tone- Where notes in a scale are whole step apart


Example: C- D- F#- G#

9th chord- An additional 9th note on a chord


Example: In the key of C, every letter has an assigned number

C- 1 (octave low) G-5


D- 2 A- 6
E- 3 B- 7
F- 4 C- 8 (octave high)
D- 9

C triad chord has C-F-G


Add the 9th which is D
Therefore, C9 will become C- F- G- (D)
