1. A piece of copper originally 305 mm long is pulled in tension with a stress of 276 MPa. If the
deformation is entirely elastic, what will be the resultant elongation? The magnitude of E for copper is
110 GPa.

2. A tensile stress is to be applied along the long axis of a cylindrical brass rod that has a diameter of 10 mm.
Determine the magnitude of the load required to produce a 2.5 X 10-3 mm change in diameter if the
deformation is entirely elastic. The value for Poisson’s ratio for brass is 0.34 and the modulus of
elasticity is 97 GPa.

3. A tensile test is performed on a metal specimen, and it is found that a true plastic strain of 0.20 is produced
when a true stress of 575 MPa is applied; for the same metal, the value of K is 860 MPa. Calculate the
true strain that results from the application of a true stress of 600 MPa.
4. For some metal alloy, a true stress of 415 MPa produces a plastic true strain of 0.475. How much will a
specimen of this material elongate when a true stress of 325 MPa is applied if the original length is 300
mm? Assume a value of 0.25 for the strain-hardening exponent n.
5. A cylindrical metal specimen having an original diameter of 12.8 mm and gauge length of 50.80 mm is
pulled in tension until fracture occurs. The diameter at the point of fracture is 6.60 mm, and the fractured
gauge length is 72.14 mm. Calculate the ductility in terms of percent reduction in area and percent
elongation. Also, find the fracture strength.
6. The following true stresses produce the corresponding true plastic strains for a brass alloy. What true stress
is necessary to produce a true plastic strain of 0.25?
True Stress (psi) True Strain
50 000 0.1
60 000 0.2
7. A metal is deformed in a tension test into its plastic region. The original specimen had l0 = 50 mm and A0
= 322.6 mm2. At one point in the tensile test, the gage length l1 = 63.5 mm and the corresponding
engineering stress σa1= 172.5 MPa; at another point, the tensile test prior to necking, the gage length l 2 =
78.5 mm and the corresponding engineering stress σ a2= 193 MPa. Determine the strength coefficient K
and strain hardening exponent n.
8. A hot working operation is carried out at various speeds. The strength constant ( C ) 30,000 lb/in2 and the
strain-rate sensitivity exponent (m) 0.15. Determine the flow stress if the strain rate is (a) 0.01/sec
(b) 1.0/sec, (c) 100/sec.
9. A tensile test is performed to determine the parameters strength constant C and strain-rate sensitivity
exponent (m ) for a certain metal. At a strain rate ( ϵ1*)12/s, the stress is measured at 160 MPa; and at a
strain rate ( ϵ2*) 250/s, the stress 300 MPa. (a) Determine C and m.
