EXERCISE 1

SIMPLE STRESSES

1. An engine part is being tested with a load of 30,000 lb. the allowable tensile stress is
10,000 psi, modulus of elasticity of 40 x 105 psi. If the original length of specimen is
42 inches with elongation not exceeding 0.0015 inch, what diameter of the specimen
is required?

2. Considered is 20 deg C and a maximum temperature of 30 deg C is designed for, and

the modulus of elasticity of steel to be 207,000 Mpa, determine the clearance between
rails such that adjoining rail will just touch at maximum design temperature.

3. Compute the nominal shear stress at the surface, in MPa, for a 50 mm diameter shaft
that is subjected to a torque of 0.48 kN-m.

4. For a given material, the modulus of elasticity is 15,000,000 psi in tension and
6,000,000 psi in shear. Determine the Poisson’s ratio for this material.

5. A beam of regular rectangular cross-section is 64 mm broad, 100 mm deep and 1.6

m long. It is simply supported at each end and carries a concentrated load of 10 kN at
its mid-length. Neglecting the weight of the beam, find the maximum stress in the
material.

6. Find the twisting moment in a solid shaft 125 mm diameter when the angle of twist is
0.5 degree on a length of 1.8 m, the modulus of rigidity of the shaft material being 93
GN/m^2

7. Compute the induced/compressive stress of a steel solid shafting of 50 mm diameter

and 800 mm in length that is subjected to an increase of temperature by 80 deg. C.

8. Two 30-mm thick plates are fastened by two bolts, 25 mm in diameter. If the plates
are subjected to 50 kN tension, find the bearing stress in the bolts.

9. A 6-mm steel wire is 5 meters long and stretches 8 m under a given load. If the
modulus of elasticity is 200 GPa, find the load applied.

10. A simply supported timber beam is 50 mm by 200 mm in cross-section and 4 m long.

If the fiber stress is not to exceed 8.3 MPa and the beam weight is neglected, find the
maximum midspan concentrated load that the beam can support.
