Task 1 Question
You recently attended a meeting at a hotel. When you returned home, you
found you had left some important papers at the hotel.
Topic sentence
• The bar graph shows how many servings of certain
food items sold on average every day in two
different seasons at the Vista Cafe.
Discussion
• This topic sentence mentions the main features of
the graphic. It avoids copying exact phrases and
sentences from the task and graphic title by using
the phrase how many instead of the number of,
certain instead of selected, and every day instead of
daily.
Overview
Main ideas – Choose the best option
Answer
• A is the best main idea for the paragraph. It is a general
statement about the difference in sales numbers among the
selected food items.
• Statement B is too general. It doesn't say when people bought
the items or how you will compare them.
• Statement C is too specific. It is only about one item.
Make Notes About Comparisons
• In Task 1, you will be asked to make comparisons where
relevant.
• When you look at a graphic, look for things you can compare.
• The graphic might show, for example, different places, types of
people, types of activities, products, and/ or changes over time.
• Look for similarities and differences among these things.
• Ask yourself Who? What? When? and Where? about the
graphics.
• Use this same information to find comparisons.
Comparisons
Topic sentence
• The graph shows how many men and women in Marysville paid for cell phone service from 1995 to 2015.
Overview
• The number of subscribers of each gender rose at similar rates during the ten-year period.
Discussion
The second sentence or overview, tells what you will compare (number of subscribers) and how you will
compare them (rose at similar rates).
Look for where things change. Look for where numbers go up
Comparing - Details or down. Look for where the biggest differences are. For this
graphic two comparisons:
1. the average daily sales of different food items in winter
2. the average daily sales of different food items in summer
The relevant details will be about how many servings of each item were
sold. Look at the following details
Comparison 1
Comparison 2
1. rose /climbed/increased,
2. sharply/significantly
3. drop/fall/decrease
4. dropped/fell/decreased
5. slight
6. dropped/fell/decreased
Conclusion
In the conclusion, you sum up the ideas you developed in your report. In the
introduction, you made a general statement about the comparisons you
planned to make. The conclusion is a restatement of these ideas.
Introduction
The bar graph shows how many servings of certain food items sold on
average every day in two different seasons at the Vista Cafe. The average
number of sales of each item changed with the season.
Conclusion
In general, the average daily sales of each food item changed depending on
the season. Certain items were more popular in the winter and certain
others were more popular in the summer.
Conclusion
Introduction
The graph shows how many men and women in Marysville paid for cell
phone service from 1995 to 2015. The number of subscribers of each
gender rose at similar rates during the ten-year period.
Conclusion
Overall, while the numbers of both male and female subscribers rose
significantly, they rose more for men.
Discussion
The introduction states the comparisons that will be made in the body of the
essay--the number of male and female cell phone subscribers. The conclusion
makes a general statement about these comparisons-that the rate of increase
was higher for men than for women.
