MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS.
Themes:

 Motorcycle riding process for example over speeding, recklessness.

 Things used in motorcycle riding for example protective
equipment, motorcycles
 People involved for example motorcycle riders, passengers and 3rd parties
 Consequences for example injuries, deaths

Relevant information needed.

1. People:
Riders: age young adults over speed, experience, disability (fractures), intoxication
(drugs, alcohol)

Third parties: Pedestrians ( education background for example traffic lights)

2. Consequences:
Hospital (depletes hospital equipments according to frequency)

Riders (minor accidents, major accidents for example fractures, head trauma, Brain
damage, death either before or after reaching hospital)

4. Process:
Riders: Training and experience, skills, risk taking behaviours such as drinking alcohol.

Weather: foggy or rainy which affects the driving process.

Poor conditions of the roads: potholes, uneven roads, sharp corners

Situation of the road: destructions eg phones, billboards, passenger, other road users
How to find the information
1. People:
Riders (national ID, register)
Pedestrians ( level of education)

2. Things: patients on surgical ward.

3. Consequences:
Hospitals (emergency wards, equipments)
Health workers, medical records (kind of injury)

4. Process:
Interviewing the riders, observing on the road.
Observation.
Reckless driving: observations, users, passengers
Poor roads: Through the community (focus groups), the traffic police (records), NGOs
(know the state of the roads, most problematic roads), accident scene.

CATHY
Research group work
Investigating the prevalence of road accidents caused by motorcylces among the in-
patients in KRRH.

Trigger for our research group work

a) - Boda riding process ( speed, recklessness)
b) - in relation to the things used in boda riding ( the concept of protective
equipment and status)
c) - the people that ride, passengers and third parties ( those using cars, the
pedestrians)
d) - consequences of the accidents.
- mostly used mode of transport by most.
Relevant information to look for.
a). Rider behavior and training - knowledge of traffic laws, risk taking behaviors like
taking substances before riding.
Rider distraction, influence of substances, bad driving habits ( over speeding,
overtaking at wrong places like corners)
Situation of the road - Poor roads, sharp corners
The weather - foggy, raining heavily ( visibility is impaired)

b). Equipment - passengers having helments

c). Boda boda riders
- extent to which they are trained
- their age groups ( the younger ones( youth, minor) and older ones, adult) cut off
point is age 18
- experience
-The status - intoxication ( influence of alcohol, marijuana, weed), disability ( any
fractures) and other medical conditions ( hx of epilepsy, under stress)
Pedestrians - do they know which side of the road to move on...if they know the
different colors of the traffic lights....if they can cross the road ( look left, look right,
look left again and if the road is clear, you can cross)

d). -consequences on riders - bruises, minor cuts, fractures, TBIs(cerebral

hematomas), death
-Consequences on the hospital - depletes hospital resources... diversion of resources
to help patients with accidents

Where to look for that information

a). Interviews the riders and observation on the road ( traffic cameras)
b). Equipment
c). Boda boda riders - have to consult the ministry of works to check for the
licences, national ID
The status - get from patients with fractures on surgical ward

Pedestrians -

d). A&E - how many times the drugs are stocked

Health workers
Check medical records ( frequencies)
Ask local people about the experiences of the accidents happening in their areas
(people at the scene).

And how to look for it very quickly

a). Ask the casualties, the witnesses, traffic officers.
b). Equipment - observation, from traffic officers ( how many have registered
helments), ask the riders
c). Boda boda riders - look at the driving licences (assume that the skills are tested)
- ask for their age, check records of age of these people ( national ID
Pedestrians - ask if they went to school and their highest level of education,
