Q.1. Translate the source text and then discuss into which of Nida’s (1964) translation
approaches your translation falls. Support your answer with examples from your
translation. Write 40 words to support your argument.
ST:

"You mean that that's where -- " "There must have been a reason for making the change, and
there doesn't really seem to be a sensible one. It is, frankly, a stupid place to have steps
down to the lawn. But that end of the terrace is a very quiet place — it's not overlooked from
the house except by one window — the window of the nursery, on the first floor. Don't you
see, that if you want to bury a body the earth will be disturbed and there must be a reason for
its being disturbed. The reason was that it had been decided to move the steps from in front
of the drawing-room to the end of the terrace. I've learnt already from Dr. Kennedy that Helen
Halliday and her husband were very keen on the garden, and did a lot of work in it. The daily
gardener they employed used merely to carry out their orders, and if he arrived to find that
this change was in progress and some of the flags had already been moved, he would only
have thought that the Hallidays had started on the work when he wasn't there.

If we look at the both versions, we noticed that the Arabic
version contains extra or added information which are not
included in the ST. Example The underlined words in red
color have been added to the TT ; to make the content of
the TT looks very clear and has no ambiguous information
as the TT reader wants to know the implicit meaning in the
.ST looks much coherent in terms of information provided

Q2. Based on your evaluation to the English source text and Arabic source text, analyse
the use of Nida’s (1964) techniques in the Arabic version. Write 40 words to support
your arguments.

ST:
I see things that have happened there-- or else I see things that are going to happen there --
and that would be worse. Perhaps a woman called Helen is going to be murdered there....
Only I don't see if it's the house that's haunted why I should see these awful things when I am
away from it. So I think really that it must be me that's going queer. And I'd better go and see
a psychiatrist at once -- this morning." "Well, of course, Gwenda dear, you can always do that
when you've exhausted every other line of approach, but I always think myself that it's better
to examine the simplest and most commonplace explanations first.

You need to compare between the two texts and show the techniques used in both

By comparing the content of the information in both texts, we realized that :
(a)The subtraction procedure is used here since the first sentence in red
color has been deleted from the translation. The main reason behind
such deletion is not clear although all the lexical words of the
sentence is translatable into Arabic. But we believe such deletion is
due to unknown reason .
(b) Moreover, the alteration procedure is used in here. If we look at the
verb ‘ see’, we noticed that it is translated into ‘ ‫ ”اتخيل‬. As we know
that the intended meaning of the verb ‘see’ is totally different from ‘
‫ ’تخيل‬, such change is occurred for stylistic reason and to create
different semantic shift that makes the meaning looks more catchy
and attractive. We can interpret the the meaning of ‘see’ and ‘ ‘ ‫ تخيل‬,
as a case of near synonym between the two languages to make the
translation flowery with various lexical meaning that helps to attract
the TT reader.
(c) Furthermore, Addition procedures is prevailed in here, as happened when
the translator has added the phrase ‫ الجدران‬z‫ اقتصر االمر على ورق‬to the TT
text though it is not existed in the that part of the sentence. Such
addition, is to clarify the meaning and the sequence of the ST
information as narrated by the writer of the ST. In addition, we believe
that it somehow useful to see that the content information of the ST
is conveyed clearly with the help of the additional information that
occurred by the translator to make the meaning readable.
