Subject Name: Computer Networks Subject Code: 21CSH-256

1. Aim:

Implement different network topologies like Star, Bus with the help of packet
tracer or NS2software

2. Software Requirements: Packet Tracer or NS2

3. H/W Requirement :-

Processor – Any suitable Processor e.g. Celeron

Main Memory - 128 MB RAM
Hard Disk – minimum 20 GB IDE Hard Disk
Removable Drives–1.44 MB Floppy Disk Drive
–52X IDE CD-ROM Drive
PS/2 HCL Keyboard and Mouse

Star Topology:

4. Topologies definition :

It is a type of network topology in which every device in the network is individually

connected to a central node, known as the switch or hub.

5. Features of topologies:

• All the devices are connected to the central hub

• No disruption happens when adding or removal of cables takes place
DEPARTMENT OF
COMPUTER SCIENCE & ENGINEERING
• Failure of a single node has no effect on the entire network

6. Advantages/ Disadvantages:
Advantages:

• Easy fault detection because the link are often easily identified.

• No disruptions to the network when connecting or removing devices.

• Each device requires just one port i.e. to attach to the hub.

Disadvantages:

• If hub goes down everything goes down, none of the devices can work without
hub.
• Hub requires more resources and regular maintenance because it’s the central
system of star .
• Extra hardware is required (hubs or switches) which adds to cost

Bus Topology:

8. Topologies definition :

Bus topology is a network type in which every computer and network device is
connected to a single cable. It is bi-directional.

9. Features of topologies:

• It transmits data only in one direction.

• Every device is connected to a single cable
• If one device fails, other devices are not impacted.

10. Advantages/ Disadvantages:

Advantages:

• It is cost effective..

• Cable required is least compared to other network topology.

• Easy to expand joining two cables together.

Disadvantages:

• Cables fails then whole network fails.

DEPARTMENT OF
COMPUTER SCIENCE & ENGINEERING
• If network traffic is heavy or nodes are more the performance of the network
decreases.

• Cable has a limited length.

11. Screenshots:

12. Result:

Simulated Star and Bus Network topologies.

Learning Outcomes:

• We learnt how to use cisco packet tracker.

• We understand the concept of star and bus topology.
• We understand how different network topology work.
