PHYS101 Section 8

Homework 2 Due: 22.10.2020 Thursday 17:30

Homework procedures:
▪ Use only one side of white A4 paper. Start each solution on a new page, write page numbers. Write your
answers with correct number of significant figures. Box final answers. Write clearly. Fill and sign the
cover page.
▪ Take photo of each paper and submit to SUBMISISON LINK at SECTION 8 MOODLE page in form of
a single PDF. (Do not send in separate image files. Learn how to convert to pdf. Do not forget to add
signed honor code. Submissions without Honor Code (Cover Page) will not be graded.)
▪ Staple papers in order together with cover page. Do not put into a plastic bag. You must keep hardcopies
in case we request them.
▪ Use problem solving techniques discussed in the class (when needed). Each of them should contain an
analysis of the problem, a well-constructed solution, and checks.
▪ Not all of the problems may be graded, therefore do all of them.

1) A ball is thrown at an angle θ up to the top of a cliff of height L, from a point a distance
L from the base. Assuming that one of the quantities given below is the initial speed
required to make the ball hit right at the edge of the cliff, which one is it? (Don’t solve
the problem from scratch, just check special cases.)

2) A stone thrown up a slope with speed v0. Show that the range of the gun (measured
2𝑣02cos2𝑏
along the slope) is 𝐿 = (tan 𝑏 − tan 𝑎).
𝑔 cos 𝑎

3) For what launch angle will the height and range of a projectile be equal?

4) A boy stands at the peak of a hill which slopes downward uniformly at angle 𝛽. At
what angle 𝛼 from the horizontal should he throw a rock so that it has the greatest
range?

5) Neglect air resistance for the following. A soccer ball is kicked from the ground into
the air. When the ball is at a height of 12.5 m, its velocity is (5.6i + 4.1j) m/s.
a. To what maximum height will the ball rise?
b. What horizontal distance will be traveled by the ball?
c. With what velocity (magnitude and direction) will it hit the ground?

6) Can Newton’s first law be considered merely a special case of the second law with 𝑎⃗ = 0? If so, is the first
law really needed?

7) A machine is illustrated in the sketch on the right. All surfaces are frictionless.
a. What force F must be applied to M1 to keep M3 from rising or falling?
b. Assume F is zero. Find the acceleration of M1.

8) Figure shows a heavy cart, of mass m, which rolls down along the top surface of
ramp of mass M. Top surface of ramp is inclined at angle ϴ relative to the bottom
surface of the ramp which lies on the horizontal floor. All friction forces are
negligible. What is the acceleration of the ramp relative to the floor?

9) A pendulum of mass m hangs from a support fixed to a trolley. Find the direction of the string of the
pendulum, i.e. its angle a with the vertical, and its tension T in the following cases:
a. The trolley moves uniformly on a horizontal plane.
b. The trolley moves horizontally with acceleration a.
c. The trolley rolls freely down an inclined plane at an angle φ to the horizontal.

d. The trolley rolls up the plane with acceleration b directed along the plane.
e. The trolley rolls down the plane with the same acceleration b.

10) Planes 1 and 2 have friction coefficients 1 and 2 respectively. Find the relation between m1, m2, 1, 2, 1
and 2 such that,
a. m1 is about to slip down plane 1.
b. m2 is about to slip down plane 2.

11) A man is raising himself and the platform on which he stands with a uniform
acceleration of a by means of the rope-and-pulley arrangement shown on the right.
The man has mass M and the platform has mass m. Assume that the pulley and rope
are massless and move without friction, and neglect any tilting effects of the platform.
a. Draw system diagrams (i.e. free body diagrams) for the man and the platform
and draw a separate force diagram for each, showing all the forces acting on
them. Label each force and clearly indicate its direction.
b. What are the tensions in the ropes A, B, and C?
c. What is the contact force exerted on the man by the platform?

12) A chain of mass m forming a circle of radius R is slipped on a smooth round cone with half-angle θ. Find the
tension of the chain if it rotates with a constant angular velocity w about a vertical axis coinciding with the
symmetry axis of the cone.

13) A small mass of m rests on a larger mass of M which also rests on a spinning disk at a distance R from the
axis of rotation. The coefficients of friction between disk and M are µ s1 (static) and µk1 (kinetic), and
coefficients of friction between m and M are µ s2 and µk2 (where µs1> µk1> µs2> µk1). Find the maximum
frequency of rotation that disk can have such that masses do not slide.
