ASSIGNMENT 4: LESSONS FROM THE CLASSROOM

Celta criteria
Successful candidates can demonstrate their learning by:
Noting their own teaching strengths and weaknesses in different situations in light
of feedback from learners, teachers and teacher educators.
Identifying which ELT areas of knowledge and skills they need further development
in.
Describing a specific way they might develop their ELT knowledge and skills beyond
the course.
Using written language that is clear, accurate and appropriate to the tasks.

In this assignment we would like you to reply to a letter. (see next page)

Length: Approximately: 800 -1000 words

Before you start this, read through the observation tasks you completed on
experienced teachers and on your peers, also your self-evaluation forms and your
tutorials to help you reflect on your own teaching.

N.B. Please ensure that you include examples observation from peers and/ or
tutors to support each section e.g.

I have worked on my instructions. In TP 2 and TP 3, my tutor noted in my

action points that :
‘instructions need further work’ TP 2
‘script instructions and simplify your language’ TP 3

I acted on this and thought through what to say, especially when

setting up activities. I also noted how one of my peers, Anna, gave
her instructions and she suggested scripting these. I then tried these out on
my peers.
As a result, subsequent tutor feedback indicated progress in
this area. In TP 4 my tutor noted and praised my ‘clear setting up
of instructions and in TP 6 ‘your instruction setting and checking
have become a strength.’

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your recent application to teach with us.

As part of our interview and selection procedure we ask candidates to

provide us with more detail about their teaching and what they have learnt, both on
the course and about themselves. We would appreciate it if you could comment on
the following points:

made progress in. Please provide specific examples of evidence of this based on
feedback from your tutors or peers.
 at least 2 areas you are going to work on further in your first teaching post to
continue your development as a teacher. Please give specific examples of
strategies or techniques you will use in order to make progress in these areas.
 which areas of knowledge you intend to pursue further after the course and
specific suggestions for doing this.

As you will be working as a teacher of English, we would like to remind you that we
require you to have a very high level of proficiency in English and so we will also be
looking at your own use of English when considering your application.

We thank you very much for your time over this and we look forward to hearing from
you.

Yours sincerely,
