In formulating the “scope and
delimitation”, it is essential that
the researcher has already
defined the major variables of
the study which are contained in
the title of the research and in
the general statement of the
problem. A variable is any factor
or property that a researcher
measures, controls and/or
manipulates.
Research Title: Biodiversity Assessment of
Insects in Different Growth Stages of
Rainfed Rice at Barangay Oma-Oma, Ligao,
Albay, Philippines (Baroga, 2011)

Major Variable: Biodiversity Assessment of

Insects in Different Growth Stages
Independent Variable: Different Growth
Stages of Rainfed Rice
Dependent Variable: Diversity of Insect
Species
Method: Biodiversity Assessment
The “scope and delimitation” includes the
coverage of the study area, the subjects, the
research instrument, the research issues and
concerns, the durations of the study, and the
constraints that have direct bearing on the result of
the studies. This is an important part of your research
because this will define the range of your research. In
writing the cope and delimitation, you may use the
following guides:

• Use only one to two paragraphs.

• Write only the range of topics being studied.
• You may include the time frame, sample size, and
the limitation of the methods to be employed.
THE SCOPE
A Scope addresses how a study will be narrowed, and how it is
bounded. This is the place to explain the things that you are doing
and why you have chosen not to do them. In here, give reasons why a
particular literature will not be reviewed, the population you are not
studying, the methodological procedures you will not use. Limit your
discussion of scope to the things that a reader might reasonably
expect you to do but that you, for clearly explained reasons, have
decided not to do. The scope usually includes the general problem to
be investigated during the time frame or work.

Sample phrases that help express the scope of the study:

The coverage of this study…………
The study consists of ……….
The study covers the …………
This study is focus on ……….
THE DELIMITATION
The Delimitation of the study is delimiting a
study by geographic location, age, sex, population
traits, population size, or other similar
considerations. Delimitations is used to make study
better and more feasible and not just for the
interest of the researcher. It also identifies the
constraints or weaknesses of your study which are
not within the control of the researcher.

Sample phrases that help express the scope of the

study:
The study does not cover the ……
The researcher limited this research to ……
The study is limited to ……

The components of the scope
and delimitation answer the
basic questions Wh
Who en
(Wh-questions):

Why
Components:
1. WHAT – The topic of investigation and the variables included
Example: Growth Effect of Fertilizers; Efficiency of Automated Hinged-Door;
Evaluation of Arduino-Based Automatic Alarm

2. WHERE – The locale, venue or settings of the research

Example: researcher’s residence

3. WHEN – The time frame in which the study will be conducted

Example: 3-week experimentation in September; from November 2021 to
May 2022
Components:
4. WHY – The purpose or general objective of the study
Example: To evaluate the growth effect of oregano leaves extract as an
alternative fertilizers to tomato plants.

5. WHO – The subject of the study, characteristics of the subjects in the

study (age, sex, family, and other traits), the population

Example: 3-week-old duck embryo; 15 Winstar female rats

Components:
6. How – The methodology of the research which may include the
research design, data gathering technique, sampling procedures and
data analysis scheme.

Example: This is a quantitative research that will gather a primary data

(such as laboratory testing which is compressive strength test, splitting
tensile strength test and flexural tensile test) through a
quasi-experimental research design and data will be analyzed using
Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION EXAMPLE 1 (Imperial, 2014) SCOPE
The study has focused on the investigation of the diversity of spiders and
other insects that occur in abaca plantation during the sampling every month
from June to September 2013 in Tabiguian, Tabaco City, Albay. The study
was conducted on the existing abaca plantation. The juvenile spiders and
insects were not included in this study. The study focused on the diversity of
spiders and insects found in 100 x 100 -meter sampling plot. The prevailing
weather conditions have been gathered/ recorded during the sampling period.
Sampling was done on monthly basis. The identification of spiders and insects
was delimited to Family level.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION EXAMPLE 2 (Razali and Ishak, 2016)

Based on previous studies, information from books, journals,

conferences and the internet, this study will be conducted by
substituting waste PET bottle fibre at percentage of 0.5%, 1.0%
and 1.5% as replacement for fine aggregate in the concrete. For
the control purpose, normal concrete mix with no added of
waste PET bottle fibre were used in this study. This research
involves laboratory testing which is compressive strength test,
splitting tensile strength test and flexural tensile test.

The scope and delimitation summarizes the information about the research
such as when, where, how, and why are we doing the research. And the
delimitation helps us realize what we need to improve for the research.
We were able to do the scope and
delimitation properly and it made me
realize what we need to do to further
improve our research.
