ENGLISH SCORE TEST PREPARATION MODULE
LISTENING SECTION
The questions cover the Personal, Public and Professional domains, using authenticlanguage and
contexts.
Note that EnglishScore is a mobile test, so the question format in the real test is different from
what you see in this module, e.g. in the mobile test, you will need to tapthe correct answer for
the multiple-choice questions. However, this question bank willhelp you to prepare and practise
for the test and to understand the different question types we use in our test.
For more information about the test-taking experience and other useful information, please see
the EnglishScore Core Skills Test Guide. You can also visit the website at
www.englishscore.com.
The listening section includes questions for the four CEFR levels that EnglishScorecovers: A2,
B1, B2, C1.
2. Level B1
This level requires you to understand the main points of clear, standard speech about everyday or
job-related topics. Situations include phone calls, meetings and interviews.
3. Level B2
This level requires you to understand extended, standard speech about familiar topics that may
contain complex ideas. Situations include broadcasts, reviews, presentations and lectures.
4. Level C1
This level requires you to understand extended speech about abstract, complex orunfamiliar topics.
Situations include job interviews, lectures, talks and meetings.
Listening Section Practice
Before we learn more about the listening section in the EnglishScore test, please payattention to
the following information about the listening practice on how to prepare yourself for the
listening test.
Before taking the test, please learn the type of English score test. Listening test in the
EnglishScore is created based on the CEFR level. The level of difficulties ranging from the
least easy to the most difficult vocabulary based on the situation or context spoken by native
speakers. Almost all types of the questions are in the short conversation typebetween two
people talking about specific topics.
2. Practice
Improve your listening skills by becoming an active listener. Films and TV series may befun to
watch, but going further will make a big difference. Listen to a variety of English language
resources, such as podcasts, news reports and Ted talks, which will expose you to new
vocabulary and different accents (you may not just hear British accents during the test
recordings).
The aim is to make listening a part of your daily life. You can find a variety of interesting and fun
content online. Start with topics you are most interested in, before moving onto more academic
material.
Being used to hearing English will also give you the confidence you need to manageyour stress
during the test.
During the test, you will not have any opportunities to write down any of the keywords on the
paper because you will be required to pay attention to the mobile device you use for the test. As
you read the questions, try to predict the context of the recordings – whowill be speaking, what
the speech will be about.
For the keyword, think of other words that could replace them. For the multiple-choicequestions,
you may not hear those exact words in the recording.
Concentrate on the question or statement and try to predict what kind of information is needed. Is it
a noun? Is it a verb? Make sure the sentence you produce is grammaticallyaccurate, and you use
the right form of the word.
4. Beware of distractors
What you hear first may not be the right answer, so watch out for distractors. For example, the
speaker may say one thing, but then reverse their answer. You may also find that the speaker
mentions all the options with slight differences in meaning. Pay attention to the details.
Synonyms and antonyms also often be used in the dialogue. It isnot natural to find the exact same
words in the answers as we heard in the dialogue.
For example, you hear the word ‘open’ in ‘opening the lid’ yet you find ‘unlock’ instead inthe
answers.
At the end of the section, you will find the listening transcripts and the answers.

subject without using the internet. Can you get together in threes or fours and discuss how you
might be able to do this? That should be interesting. So, anyquestions?

something quite similar last term – at my old school right before I moved here. So I thought I’d

500 words. You can write about any subject, I can give you some ideas if you need them, but
the story must be your own work. We’ll spend every day in English lessons next week working
on your stories. Let’s see if our class can write the best stories in the school! So start thinking

rooms – there wasn’t much space in them.

on time and they find that distracting. You also thought the films we offerare mainly thrillers. As

comedies. And finally, a few of you said that there aren’t any chairs left when you arrive, so
we’re going to move the club to a bigger room.

about focusing on things like that.
