⚫ First and foremost step in Research


Process
⚫ Refers to some difficulty which a
researcher experiences in theoretical or
practical situation
⚫ Researcher want to obtain a solution for
the same
Nature of Research Problem
⚫ There must be an individual or group which has
some difficulty.
⚫ There must be some objectives to be attained at.
⚫ There must be alternative means for obtaining
the objectives.
⚫ There must be some doubt with regard to the
selection of alternatives ( relative efficiency)
⚫ There must be some environment to which
difficulties pertains.
Cautions in Selecting the Problem
⚫ Subject which is overdone should not be normally
chosen
⚫ Try to avoid controversial subject
⚫ Too narrow or vague problems should be avoided
⚫ Selected subject should be familiar and feasible
⚫ Qualification and training of researcher, cost and
time factor also be considered
⚫ Selection of a problem must be preceded by a
preliminary study
Steps involved in Defining a Problem
1.Statement of Problem in a general
way

⚫ Problem should stated in broad general way according


to practical, scientific or intellectual interest
⚫ Go thoroughly in the subject matter concerning of a
problem
⚫ Researcher may undertake some short of preliminary
survey
⚫ By cool thinking and rethinking ambiguities in stated
problem must be resolved
2. Understanding the nature of
Problem

⚫ Understand nature and origin of problem


clearly
⚫ Discuss the problem who raised similar
problem previously
⚫ Consider once again all those points that
induce to make general statement
concerning the problem
3. Surveying the available Literature

⚫ Literature concerning the problem


necessarily surveyed and examined
⚫ Researcher must be well-conversant with
relevant theories in field, reports, and
records
⚫ Knowing what data is available often
serves to narrow the problem itself and
technique that might be used
4. Developing the ideas through discussions

⚫ Various new ideas can be developed


through discussions
⚫ Colleagues and experienced people helps
in same field will helpful ( Experience
Survey)

5. Rephrasing Research problem

⚫ Now rephrase the problem in working


proposition
⚫ Put research problem in as specific term
as possible so that it may be operationally
