Introduction/Hook 1. So we’re going to do a little competition today. It is going to be challenging, I

made all the activities hard on purpose to really make you all think. So don’t
give up if you’re having trouble, just do your best to complete everything.
There’s going to be three rounds, so if you don’t win one, you could always win
the next one. I’ll be keeping track of the points, but just keep doing your best!

Instructional 1. Teacher will split students into groups with 4-6 students, about 4 groups.
Round 1
Activities &
2. So for the first activity, you’ll have to work with your groups to decipher a
Strategies message. I’m going to give you one paper that has the hidden message and a
second paper that has a key to figure out what the message is. You’ll have 10
minutes to work with your group to figure the message out. The first group to
solve the message will get a point.
3. The one rule for all of these activities though is that you can only talk to your
group members, not anyone that’s in a different group. Don’t worry, because at
the end we’re all going to talk together and share what happened during the
activities.
4. Teacher will set a 10-minute timer on the board.
5. Teacher will hand out Activity #1 papers to the groups, giving 2 groups the
completed key and 2 groups the uncompleted key.
6. Students will work together to complete the activity, with the first group that
finishes getting a point. The teacher will tally points on the white board.
7. While students are working, the teacher will call the members of 1 or 2 groups
over to talk or complete another small task before they can keep working on
the activity.
8. So I know that activity might have been frustrating and hard, but remember,
you can only talk to your group members right now. You’ll get to share with
everyone else at the end.
Round 2
9. The next activity we’re doing is a word unscramble. So the paper I’m going to
give you has 10 words, but the letters are all mixed up. With your group, you
have to figure out what word the letters spell. The first group to finish will get a
point. You’ll have 10 minutes to work.
10. To help you guys out, each group will get some of these tokens that you can
exchange with me for a hint. Each token is worth one hint and you only have a
limited number, so use them wisely.
11. Teacher will hand out Activity #2 papers to the groups.
12. Teacher will hand out tokens to the groups, giving 2 groups 3 tokens each and
the other 2 groups 6 tokens each.
13. Teacher will set a timer for 10 minutes.
14. Students will work together to complete the activity, with the first group that
finishes getting a point. The teacher will update the tally on the white board.
15. Good job guys! This was another hard activity but you did a good job. We’ll
talk about how it was later, but for now we’ve got to move on to our last
activity.
Round 3
16. So our last activity is a little bit different. For this one, you’re going to create
something. I’m going to come around and give you your instructions and then
you can start working. Once you finish, you have to show me what you made,
but if it doesn’t look right, I’m going to send you back to fix whatever’s wrong.
You’ll only get 3 minutes.
17. Teacher will hand out Activity #3 papers to the groups and the materials each
group needs (cups or cards).
a. Group 1 gets the paper with the simplest cup tower.
b. Group 2 gets the paper with the more complicated cup tower.
c. Group 3 gets to see the paper with the more complicated cup tower for
5 seconds then has to build it without the paper.
d. Group 4 gets the paper with the card tower.
18. Teacher will set a timer for 3 minutes.
19. Students will begin to work. As groups finish, the teacher will check their
work. If they haven’t completed the tower correctly, they will have to continue
to work.
20. While students are working, the teacher will try to “help” Group 1, by trying to
do things wrong or knocking down what they’ve done.
21. The first group to finish will get a point. The teacher will update the tally on
the white board.
Debrief
22. So I know some of those activities were really frustrating for you guys and
we’re going to talk about it now and share with each other what we struggled
with. Let’s start with the first activity.
23. Going one round at a time, students will share what they struggled with in each
activity.
24. When students share comments about aspects of the activities that were
purposefully unfair, the teacher will ask someone from one of the other groups
to share how their experience was different (different materials/instructions
they got).
25. Teacher will point out additional inequalities students haven’t commented on
already and allow students to share their thoughts about those.
26. I’m hearing from all of you that you’re sad, frustrated, angry, etc. with how
unfair this activity was. Can you imagine if every day at school was like this?
With other people being treated differently than you?
Real World Connection
27. For some people around the world, this is what life is like every day.
28. Teacher will explain how the challenges students faced relate to real-world
challenges girls face. The teacher will use the informational slides, showing
them on the Smart Board.

Closure Activity 1. Using the informational slides, the teacher will discuss with students possible
solutions to improve girls’ education.
2. Students will brainstorm ideas, then they will watch the video outlining some
solutions.

Grading: 100/100!!
Since I was part of the planning process as your senior project advisor, I already knew this was a top-notch lesson
that took a TON of detailed planning. Keep copies of everything, including pictures, because this is the kind of
lesson that you can use in the future to explain and showcase your experience and skills!!
