Latchkey Children
Students will identify causes, preventions, and treatments of common barriers to
learning.
Good morning everyone. Today we are going to talk about latchkey children, which is an
important barrier to learning for many kids. A latchkey kid is a child who takes care of
themselves with no adult supervision after school. First, we are going to do a quick four corners
activity.
The teacher will ask each question, giving students time to think and choose an answer
in between each one. The four options are strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly
disagree. Each option will correspond to a different corner of the room.
Four Corners Activity
1. It is okay to let a 10 year old stay home alone for 30 minutes after school until
their parents get home
2. It is okay to let a 10 year old stay home alone for 2 hours after school
3. It is okay to let a 7 year old stay home alone for 2 hours after school
4. It is okay to leave an older sibling at home alone with their younger sibling after
school
5. Having a child stay home alone after school is a better option than sending
them to childcare
After each question is posed, 2-3 students from different corners will share why they
chose that answer.
1. Teacher will explain that the warm-up scenarios are real, common problems
faced by parents to introduce the topic and then hand out the guided notes
sheet (or have students access it online)
2. Teacher will lecture using presentation slides that contain the information
3. Students will complete guided notes throughout the lecture
4. Students will consider and respond to thought questions throughout the slides
5. Teacher will allow time for students to take notes and ask questions in between
slides
6. After completing the lecture and slideshow, the teacher will ask students if
there are any remaining questions
Now that you’ve learned more about latchkey kids and how it can affect childrens’ education,
we are going to do the four corners activity we did as a warm-up again to see if your opinions
have changed.
Teacher will complete the same procedure as in the warm-up, asking students why their
opinions may have changed.
