Learning Target summarize a fictional text.
1. Teacher will randomly create groups with 2 students each. Students will
sit with their partner on the rug at the front of the room with their
whiteboard/clipboard and a pencil.
Instructional 2. Teacher will pass out the worksheet to each student and instruct them to

3. Teacher will begin reading The Trees of the Dancing Goats, projecting
Strategies the book onto the Smart Board. Teacher will pause occasionally to help
students figure out the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary. The teacher
will ask students what they think it means and call on students to share.
If it is correct, the teacher will confirm the meaning and ask students
how they came to that conclusion (reaffirming the importance of
inferences). If it is incorrect, the teacher will correct the meaning or call
on other students to give a different definition.

4. At the designated spot, the teacher will stop reading and instruct students
to work with their partners to summarize the part of the story that was
just read.
5. After students work with partners, the teacher will call on students to
share their summaries. Based on student responses, the teacher will write
a summary on their own paper as an example, correcting any mistakes
students may have in their summaries. Teacher will project their paper
onto the Smart Board so students are able to see what is written.
6. Teacher will repeat parts 4 and 5 for the beginning, middle, and end of
the story.
7. Once the teacher has finished reading the entire book and has gone over
summaries for all sections of the book, students will return to their
desks.
8. Teacher will instruct students to work independently to summarize the
book as a whole, using the summaries of the separate parts as a
reference. The teacher will remind students that only the most important
details of the book as a whole should be included, which may not be all
the details included in the summaries of the separate parts.
1. Teacher will display the summarizing rubric for students to view.
2. Students will have a paper copy of the rubric where they will grade their
final summary. If they are not happy with their score, they will revise
their summary to score better on the rubric.
Closure Activity 3. Teacher will walk around the room and assist students as needed.
4. After students are finishing grading and revising, they will turn their
paper into the collection bin at the front of the classroom.
5. Teacher will review and leave comments on the worksheets and later
return them to students for them to review the feedback.
