PERFORMANCE TASK PROBLEM SOLVING

Mathematical Modeling (Application of Function)

A mathematical model is basically a model that ca be used to solve real life problems. In involves
relationship between variables and creating a mathematical equation that can help us to predict the future
outcome of a particular problem. As we explore the world of mathematics, we can encounter many types
of equations, rules, and etc., that is useful in solving real life problems. As we learn more about skills in
math, it is very significant to us on how we can apply it in real life situation. In functions, for example, we
can actually predict the future outcome of a problem base on the data gathered. Like selling palm tree that
cost Php 150, the more costumer who purchase or buy palm tree the higher the income. The equation will
become f(x) = 150x, where the dependent variable f(x) is the future income and the independent variable
(x) is the no. of costumers.

Instructions in making mathematical model:

• Investigate some real-life situations where the concept of functions can be applied.
• Gather the data and describe the problem in mathematical terms.
• Make a table and graph to represent the data.
• Construct the mathematical model.
• Test the model.
• Make a conclusion.

Below is a simple example on how to construct a mathematical model.

MODEL PREDICTING THE FUTURE PROFIT OF MY AUNTIE’S BANANA QUE

I. INTRODUCTION
My auntie is a banana que vendor for over a decade. It is her primary source of
income and she is actually good in making a delicious banana que. Her capital for
100 pieces of banana que is Php 350 and sells it for Php 10 each. Her total income
for a day ranges from 400 – 650 depending on the number of costumers. I decided
to make a prediction formula using the concept of function to predict her future
income per day. I gather all the data needed and I constructed a prediction formula
using those data. I let the independent variable (x) for the no. of costumers and the
dependent variable f(x) as her future income per day deducted by the capital.

III. THE MATHEMATICAL MODEL

The Prediction Formula (Mathematical Model)

𝑓(𝑥 ) = 10𝑥 − 350

Where, X = no. of costumers
f(x) = future profit deducted by the capital
IV. TESTING THE MODEL
If x = 0, f(x) = 10(0) – 350 = -350
If x = 25, f(x) = 10(25) – 350 = -100
If x = 50, f(x) = 10(50) – 350 = 150
If x = 75, f(x) = 10(75) – 350 = 400
If x = 100, f(x) = 10(100) – 350 = 650
The model is suitable.

V. CONCLUSION
The data presentation and the model show that if the no. of
costumer increases, the profit will also increase. There is a direct
proportional relationship between the two variables which are the
no. of costumers and the future profit. The constructed model will
help my auntie to predict her future profit in selling banana que.

Note: You will only conduct an investigation inside your home. No need to go outside to gather some data.
You can ask your family members about their incomes and create a prediction formula to solve their future
incomes.
