ated PC to allow data transfer.

See chapter 2. Asynchronous Data.

High Speed Data Service, HSD

The Saturn B High Speed Data system provides a 56/64 Kbps full
duplex link with a terrestrial ISDN network (see figure 1.1).
The data transfer is six times faster compared to other types of data
transfer systems using lower speed (e.g. data modems with data
transfer rates such as 9600 bit/sec).
The paid connecting up time for Inmarsat-B HSD is very short (less
than 4 secs), whereas it for an analogue data modem can be 40 sec.
Use of Saturn HSD is described in various application notes available
from Nera.
The system gives possibilities to utilize the ISDN data transfer for
applications such as:
• High quality sound transmissions for broadcasting using wide
bandwidth audio codecs such as G-722 or Musicam.
• Video conferences
• Store and forward transmissions of compressed video.
• High quality Class 4 facsimile.
• Multiplexed data, facsimile and voice.
• Connection between data networks using data bridges or routers.
See chapter 3. High Speed Data.

Datacom Switch Unit

The Datacom Switch Unit (DSU) allows both an HSD and ASD sup-
ported equipment to be connected at the same time to the DTE port
of the Saturn B.
See chapter 4. Datacom Switch Unit.

Implementation
The ASD and HSD options are available in all Saturn B terminals, and
can be opened for operation by a code supplied by any of Nera ASA
agents. See "Renter/Owner Level: Optional Functions".

Protection
Protection

Protection
Two password protected user levels are provided in addition to USER
and OPERATOR level:
• RENTER, and
• OWNER
A common default password (1 2 3 4 5 6) facilitates the activation of
Enhanced Functions for new users (see "Password").
Warning! An individual OWNER password must be entered to protect
the equipment against unauthorized use. The password must be
stored in a safe place.
Up to three different operation rights can be assigned with selecta-
ble access level to each Enhanced Function:
• SETUP OPERATION – allows such as selection of ports.
Default access level: OWNER.
• UPDATE OPERATION – such as entering/deletion of data.
Default access level: OWNER.
• VIEW OPERATION – such as display readout and printout.

Renter/Owner Level
Renter/Owner Level

General
The Saturn B terminals provide the following access levels in addition
to USER (1) level and OPERATOR (2) level:
• RENTER (3), and
• OWNER (4)
The RENTER and OWNER levels are protected by passwords.
The default password for both levels is 1 2 3 4 5 6.
Password protection can be used to restrict operative functions to
different parameter levels, e.g.:
• level 4 (OWNER) allowed to change setup.
• level 3 (RENTER) allowed to read data.
• level 2 (OPERATOR) given no access to reading or setup.
• level 1 (USER) has standard minimum operational functions.
These restrictions can be applied according to function, e.g.:
the RENTER level can be allowed to configure the ASD function, but
restricted to reading only in the access code function.
An individual password may be assigned to each level using the "SET
PASSWORD" function no.13, see "Password".

Operation
The Saturn B Asynchronous Data link is operated in three ways:
• hotline call, i.e. interactive computer controlled interface, or
• manual call, by using the Display Handset or Telephone.
• AT calls, by using the PC keyboard.
Hotline Call
This mode is intended for equipment such as computers, network con-
nections and other equipment that can utilize the CCITT V24 protocol for
connecting up and clearing the communication. Circuits no. 108 (DTR)
Operation

and 125 (RI) are used for automatic connection and clearing.
Dialing
When circuit 108 goes high, the number stored in short number 98 is
sent automatically. Calls are cleared when circuit 108 goes low.
Manual Call
Manual mode is intended for equipment which lack signalling features
such as audio codecs.
Dialing from Display Handset
When dialing the remote end subscriber number from the Display
Handset, Saturn B features such as using default LES, selected LES,
short number dialing and direct dialing may be applied.

AT Commands
General
The AT command set allows you to configure the Saturn B ASD
function directly from the PC keyboard. The "AT" character sequence
is a prefix to the command string you issue to Saturn B ASD.
Every time you type AT, you are essentially asking for Saturn B
ASD’s ATtention. For instance, if you want to disconnect a telephone
call, you would type AT for attention and H for on-hook: ATH
When a value associated with a command is not entered, it is as-

AT Commands
sumed to be 0, f.ex.: AT&D equals AT&D0.

Hanging up – Escape Sequence

Once Saturn B ASD is online to another system, the only command it
recognizes is an escape code of three typed pluses, which forces
Saturn B ASD back to command mode.
Do the following when issuing the escape command:
• Wait one second after sending the last item of data.
• Type +++
• Wait one second before typing any data
Do not type the AT prefix or Carriage Return. The guard time of one
second before and after the code prevents Saturn B ASD from misin-
terpreting the occurrence of +++ in the transmitted data stream.
If necessary, the character used in the escape code or the duration of

Chapter 3. High Speed Data

Introduction
Features
The High Speed Data (HSD) system provides a 56/64 Kbps full
duplex link with automatic dial up connection.
It provides a link both from the Saturn B terminal to any subscriber
connected to the ISDN network, and from any ISDN subscriber who
can be routed to an Inmarsat Land Earth Station (LES) offering the
Inmarsat-B HSD services.
With a Saturn B terminal with V.25bis interface and a network router,
a high performance access-on-demand network may be established,
allowing as follows (see figure 3.1):
• a user equipment network to be connected to the home office
network or to Internet.
• a single user equipment to be connected to the home office net-
work or to Internet.

The V.25bis standard is a protocol for automatically setting up data
connections over a telephone network. It is used primarily in a bridge/
router application. In this application, packets destined for addresses
outside the local LAN (Local Area Network) cause the bridge/router to
initiate a call to the destination LAN.

V.25bis Dialing Cont’d
The number to be dialed is taken from a dialer map within the bridge/
router configuration file which is configured during installation of the
bridge/router.
The advantage of V.25bis dialing over DTR dialing is that multiple
LANs can be automatically dialed instead of just one pre-programmed
number as in DTR.
The Saturn B with V.25bis interface and a bridge/router allows a
remote office LAN (MES side) to communicate with a LAN at the fixed
side. See figure 3.1.
The user equipment LAN is connected to the home office LAN via
Saturn B, the Inmarsat satellite system and the ISDN network.
A typical user LAN consists a number of PCs connected to the
ethernet port of a router. The router enables the PCs in the user
equipment LAN to communicate with computers in the home office
LAN.
V.25bis Dialing Cont’d

Introduction
Features
The Data Switch Unit (DSU) allows both HSD and ASD supported
equipment to be connected at the same time to the DTE port of the
Saturn B. See figure below.
On outgoing calls from one of the PCs the DSU will act on a first
come - first served basis. On incoming calls the DSU will automati-
cally route the signal to the appropriate PC.
The DSU also has a hotline feature. When the Saturn terminal is
configured for hotline activation of data calls, a switch on the DSU
front panel will activate calls to a pre-programmed subscriber.

Installation
Installation
Connect the enclosed RS-232 interface cables between the serial
port on the PCs and the DSU. The HSD supporting equipment is to
be connected to the 25-pin HSD USER PORT (female) on the DSU,
and the ASD supporting equipment to the 9-pin ASD USER PORT
(female). The DCE PORT on the DSU is to be connected to the DTE
port on the Main Control Unit.
Note! Connection of a PC to the HSD user port requires a synchro-
nous PC interface.
The example on the next page shows connection to a standard Main
Control Unit. The location of the DTE connector varies with type of
Saturn terminal, see the individual Saturn Operator’s Manual.
See chapter 5. Appendices for description of interfaces.

Testing the installation of ASD connection

Entering a command on the PC keyboard as f.ex. ATç should
cause "OK" to be displayed on the screen.
If no response, check that the baud rate set using the Display Hand-
set function no. 86 is the same both for the PC and the MCU.
Installation

4.4 Saturn B Data Service – Chapter 4. Datacom Switch Unit

Operation
ASD outgoing calls
When DSU is idle the following occurs:
1. DSU keeps the "ASD USER PORT" connected to the "TO SAT-
URN DTE PORT". All handshaking and data signals are then
transferred through these ports transparently.
3. DSU sends a Data Signal Rate Selector (DRS/111) OFF signal to
the "TO SATURN DTE PORT" indicating to the Saturn B terminal
that this an ASD call.
4. When an ASD call is progressing, the DSU sends a Data Set
Ready (DSR/107) OFF signal to the HSD port, thus preventing
equipment connected to the "HSD USER PORT" from initiating
communication.

HSD outgoing calls

When DSU is idle and receives a Data Terminal Ready (DTR/108/1)
signal on the HSD port the following occurs:
1. DSU connects the "HSD USER PORT" to the "TO SATURN DTE
PORT" and goes busy. All handshaking and data signals are then
transferred through these ports transparently.
2. DSU sends a Data Signal Rate Selector (DRS/111) ON signal to
the "TO SATURN DTE PORT" indicating to the Saturn B terminal
that this an HSD call.
3. When an HSD call is progressing, the DSU sends a Data Set
Ready (DSR/107) OFF signal to the ASD port, thus preventing
equipment connected to the "ASD USER PORT" from initiating

Operation
communication.
4. The call is cleared when the Data Terminal Ready signal goes
OFF, or a Data Set Ready OFF signal is received on the "TO
SATURN DTE PORT".

Incoming calls
An incoming call of either the ASD or HSD type is routed to the "TO
SATURN DTE PORT" by the Saturn B terminal:
1. The Data Set Ready signal indicates the arrival of an incoming
signal.
2. Circuit 112 routes the call to the appropriate port:
- ON sends the signal ot the "HSD USER PORT"
- OFF sends the signal ot the "ASD USER PORT"

Operation Cont’d
Hotline calls
If required, a satellite call may be initiated manually via the hotline
function. Two switches allow as follows:
• Selection between ASD and HSD
• CALL activation.
The Data Terminal Ready signal is connected to the active port
when the switch is in OFF position.

General
The electrical interface for the Saturn B HSD service complies with
the CCITT V28 (IEEE RS232) standard using a 25 pin D-sub connec-
tor. Other interfaces such as X21, V35, V36 or IEEE RS530 is cov-
ered by using optional external converters.

Signal Element Timing

Saturn B applies the Transmitter Signal Element Timing on circuit 114
and the Receiver Signal Element Timing on circuit 115 from a single
64 kHz clock source.
The User Equipment shall present a data signal on circuit 103 in
which transitions between signal elements occur at the time of the
transitions from OFF to ON condition on circuit 114. At the V.28
interface level an ON condition corresponds to logical level ‘0’ at a
voltage level > +3 volts.
A transition from ON to OFF on circuit 115 shall indicate the centre of
each signal element on circuit 104.
The User Equipment can deliver a Transmitter Signal Element Timing
on circuit 113 indicating the centre of transmitted elements on circuit
103.
