What do you see as the purpose of the Code of Ethics and Principles of Professional Conduct of the

Education Profession of Florida?

The purpose of the code of ethics and principles of professional conduct of the education profession of
Florida is to have specific guidelines on what is considered ethical and not ethical as a teacher. I feel like
a lot of what is written is common sense, but it needs to be written down somewhere so people can be
held accountable when they break it, and people who may be confused will know what to do in a
professional education setting. Some of the rules are not as intuitive, or some people might not take
something into consideration because of the way they were raised. For me, the code of ethics serves as
a reminder and validation of what I feel like I should be doing as an educator.

What is a specific detailed example from this semester when you demonstrated being an ethical
educator?

As I have been subbing and working in afterschool care, I have noticed many people do not see students
as people who are capable and worthy of respect. One way I have shown this idea is by not intentionally
embarrassing students. In general, I try to always use nonverbal cues before talking, and when I do talk,
I try to be respectful and let the students know that it is an interaction not intended to be a spectacle,
but a respectful reminder. One specific instance where I chose not to embarrass a student was when
one of my students, who I will refer to as Riley (pseudonym), who is usually called out for her off task
behavior, was off task, I went up to her quietly and corrected her behavior. She was playing with pieces
of paper and folding them and drawing on them. She frequently does this during the time dedicated to
iReady/My-ON/independent work while my CT works with a small group. My CT corrects this behavior
by announcing it where everyone can hear it, and while he does not say anything intentionally
disparaging, I just feel that it could be nicer and be done in a way that is less embarrassing for Riley.

How is each specific example connected to the Code of Ethics?

This example is related to the code of ethics, specifically 3e. This ethics code is about not intentionally
embarrassing students, which is something I feel like a lot of people just jump into doing. I have seen
this when subbing, in after school programs, and even in the internship schools I have been at. I never
want to do this and so I always intentionally quietly talk to students, so they do not feel embarrassed or
disparaged. I did this with Riley so that she would not feel called out in front of the whole class and is
given the option to change her behavior without anyone else knowing about it.
