THE POWER OF LANGUAGE 3

Writers think carefully about the language and images

they choose to use in their writing- they ultimately
want us to feel a particular emotion or a visualize a
certain scene/ image in our minds. Carefully crafted
writing can help a sense of character, atmosphere,
tone, setting, etc. These effects are not accidental-
writers deliberately set out to achieve certain effects.

It’s your job to show and awareness and appreciation

of how writers achieve there effect.
WHAT IS IMAGERY? 4

I often refer to IMAGERY as being somewhat of an ‘umbrella’

term. There are different types of imagery, and there are lots of
things that go under the ‘imagery umbrella’.

Put simply, imagery refers to any words/phrases/sensory images

that allow us to visualize certain scenes in our mind

Metaphors, Similes, Personification, Onomatopoeia etc. are ALL

types of imagery

Carefully chosen vocabulary also allows writer’s to create

evocative images
WHAT IS IMAGERY?
5

Old light fixtures precariously hung from

the ceiling

In the above sentence, imagery is used.

The adverb ‘precariously’ creates an image
in our minds of the light fixtures not
being secure and potentially falling
down.
LITERARY
DEVICES
1. IMAGERY
7

• use of figurative language

• create visual representations of actions, objects and ideas in
our mind in such a way that they appeal to our physical senses

E.g. 1. The room was dark and gloomy. -The words “dark”

and “gloomy” are visual images.

2. The river was roaring in the mountains. - ??

2. SIMILE AND METAPHOR
8

• Both compare two unidentical objects and draws similarity between them
• The difference is that Simile uses “as” or “like” and Metaphor does not.
E.g 1) My love is like a red red rose” (Simile)
2) He is an old fox very cunning. (Metaphor)

3. HYPERBOLE
It is deliberate exaggeration of actions and ideas for the sake of emphasis
E.g. 1)Your bag weighs a ton! meaning ???
2) I have got a million issues to look after! >>>> identify the hyperbole
and the meaning??
4. PERSONIFICATION
9

• It gives a thing, an idea or an animal human qualities.

E.g 1. The flowers are dancing beside the lake.
2. Your example ??

5. IRONY
•It is use of the words in such a way in which the intended meaning is
completely opposite to their literal meaning
E.g. 1. So nice of you to break my new handphone!
2. Your example??
6. SYMBOLISM (SYMBOL)
10

• uses symbols, be they words, people, marks, locations, or abstract

ideas to represent something beyond the literal meaning.
E.g. 1. A red rose, or the color red, stands for love or romance.
2. Your example?
IDENTIFYING POWERFUL WORDS/ 11

IMAGES
Before we begin looking explicitly at the writer’s effect
question, let’s practice identifying powerful words/images
from a range of sentences and making at least one analytical
comment

1. Sarah clung onto her exam paper as a single tear fell down
her cheek

The writer’s use of the verb ‘clung’ creates an image of the

character feeling a sense of despair. It’s clear that she is holding
onto it tightly as she doesn’t want to let it go – perhaps she is
feeling disappointed over her results
