SCHOOL : SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
DEPARTMENT : PURE AND APPLIED SCIENCES
UNIT CODE : MATH 130
UNIT TITLE : BASIC STATISTICS
TIME : 2 HOURS

INSTRUCTIONS:
 Attempt question one compulsory and any other two questions.

Question One:
(a) Describe and compare simple random sampling and stratified sampling
as a means of selecting a sample. Giving one example for each type of a
practical situation, in which you would use that type of sampling.
[6 Marks]
(b) If you were asked to estimate the Newspaper reading consumption of a
group of people living in a particular area by sampling, how would you
procced to select your sample? [3 Marks]
c) For the frequency distribution of weights of sorghum ear-heads given in
table below. Calculate the Geometric Mean of sorghum (GM).
[5 Marks]
Weight of Sorghum X Number of Ear-Heads

d) A sample comprising 300 members is required from a population
comprising 18,000 members. It is known that the population falls into
three categories made up of: 3,000 members in category A, 6,000
members in category B, and 9,000 members in category C. Explain
clearly how you would extract a stratified sample of the required size.
[4 Marks]
e) Two judges rank the eight photographs in a competition as follows
Photograph A B C D E F G H
1st Judge 2 5 3 6 1 4 7 8
2nd Judge 4 3 2 6 1 8 5 7

Calculate Spearman’s coefficient or rank correlation for the data.

[5 Marks]

f. For the frequency distribution of seed yield of sesamum given in table

calculate the median, mode, Harmonic mean and Geometric mean yield
per plot [8 Marks]
Yield per plot (in g) Number of plots
64.5-84.5 3
84.5-104.5 5
104.5-124.5 7
124.5-144.5 20

Question Two
With reference to Correlation and Regression
(i) What is meant by regression [2 Marks]
(ii) The table shows the number of absences, x, in a Basic Statistics
course and the final exam grade, y, for 7 students. Find the
correlation and and interpret your result. [8 Marks]
X 1 0 2 6 4 3 3
Y 85 80 70 55 90 90 95
(iii) Draw a scatter diagram for the data and plot the least square
regression line on the scatter diagram [7 Marks]

mathematics questions and 6 engineering questions. An unfortunately
candidate is required to choose exactly 8 questions. Find the number of
ways;
(i) If there is no further restriction in choosing question.
[4 Marks]
(ii) Suppose that the unfortunate candidate is required to choose
exactly mathematic questions and four engineering questions.
