The production of paper has been associated with various environmental

problems, such as waste generation, air pollutioGood morning everyone, it is with great
pleasure that we present our research entitled “Water Hyacinth and Wood Paper: A
Deductive Research”. Our study aims to explore the potential of water hyacinth as a
sustainable alternative material for paper production. With the increasing demand for
paper products and the negative environmental impacts associated with conventional
paper production, it is crucial to find innovative and eco-friendly solutions. We hope that
our research will contribute to the development of sustainable practices in the paper
industry and inspire further exploration of alternative materials.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

n, deforestation, and significant energy and water usage.
The increasing amount of waste paper generated in many countries, including the
Philippines, poses a significant challenge to waste management efforts.
Finding alternative solutions to reduce the use of traditional paper is crucial to
reduce the negative impact on the environment. The potential use of water hyacinth in
paper production could help mitigate these environmental problems and reduce the need
for trees. But what are water hyacinths and why are they eligible for paper production?

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is a free-floating aquatic plant that is often

considered a problematic freshwater weed due to its rapid rate of multiplication and
ability to obstruct river transportation, fishing, harm bridges, and jam dams (Hussner et
al., 2017). This invasive plant species can be found in the Pasig River in Manila
(Arivendan, Thangiah & Chrish, 2022) and is known to have a high cellulose
concentration of 62.15% and a very low hemicellulose percentage of 14.82%, making it a
suitable source of cellulose fibers for paper production (Arivendan, Thangiah & Chrish,
2022).

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

General Statement:

The paper industry heavily relies on wood as the main raw material for paper
production. This has led to deforestation and environmental degradation. Hence, there is a
need to explore alternative raw materials for paper production that are sustainable and
environmentally friendly.

Specific Statement:

1. The depletion of forest resources due to traditional wood-based paper

production.

2. The negative impact of water hyacinth infestation on aquatic ecosystems.

3. The lack of studies on the feasibility and quality of paper produced from water
hyacinth pulp.
4. The potential environmental benefits and drawbacks of utilizing water hyacinth
as a raw material for paper production.

5. The economic viability and sustainability of scaling up water hyacinth paper

production.

 6. The consumer perception and acceptance of paper made from water hyacinth
pulp compared to traditional wood-based paper.
