Objectives Objectives:
By using technology to track heart rate during exercise, students can learn how
to set and achieve personal fitness goals, as well as develop important math
and technology skills. By communicating their goals and progress to their
peers, students can also develop greater accountability and motivation to
continue making healthy choices.
Alabama Course of Study: Physical Education (2018):

Objective 1: Students will demonstrate the ability to measure their own heart
rate before, during, and after exercise, using heart rate palpitations and an
equation with an accuracy of +/- 5 beats per minute.
Objective 2: Students will analyze heart rate data and explain how it relates to
fitness levels and the concept of target heart rate zone.
Objective 3: Students will engage in physical activities, such as jumping jacks,
hula hoops, and jump ropes, that increase their heart rate to the target heart
rate zone and maintain it for at least 10 minutes.

International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards for

Students:
Objective 1: Students will use digital tools to record and track heart rate data
during physical activities, such as counting heart rate and data tracking apps.
Objective 2: Students will collaborate with peers in small groups to collect and
analyze heart rate data, using technology tools to visualize the data and make
comparisons.
Objective 3: Students will communicate their understanding of the connection
between physical activity and heart rate, using digital tools to create and share
presentations or infographics about the topic.

Differentiation Differentiation Strategies:

Strategies
When designing the "Tracking Heart Rate During Exercise" lesson, it's
important to consider the various learning styles of the students and to
differentiate the lesson to meet the needs of all learners. Here are some
strategies that can be used to address visual learners, auditory learners,
kinesthetic learners, and special needs learners:
Visual Learners:
 Use visual aids such as heart rate posters, diagrams, and videos to
explain how to measure and track heart rate.
 Incorporate visual cues such as color-coded heart rate zones or charts
to help students understand their heart rate readings.
 Provide opportunities for students to draw or create visual
representations of their heart rate readings.
Auditory Learners:
 Use verbal instructions to explain how to measure and track heart rate.
 Provide opportunities for students to listen to their heart rate using a
stethoscope or audio monitor.
 Use audio cues such as music or sound effects to indicate changes in
heart rate.

Kinesthetic Learners:
 Incorporate physical activity into the lesson, such as jumping jacks or
running in place, to help students understand the connection between
exercise and heart rate.
 Provide hands-on opportunities for students to measure their own heart
rate, such as using the paper heart rate monitor or the Instant Heart
Rate app.
 Use movement or gestures to reinforce key concepts, such as pointing
to the heart when discussing heart rate.
Special Needs Learners:
 Provide individualized support as needed, such as using a picture
schedule or visual aids to help students understand the sequence of the
lesson.
 Use multisensory approaches, such as combining visual and auditory
cues, to help students process information.
 Modify activities as needed to ensure that all students can participate at
their own level, such as using adapted equipment or reducing the
duration or intensity of the physical activity.
Overall, by incorporating a variety of teaching strategies and differentiating the
lesson to meet the needs of all learners, the "Tracking Heart Rate During
Exercise" lesson can be accessible and engaging for all students.

E Description

Engageme Engagement:
nt
Engage: Begin by asking students what they know about heart rate and why it's
important to monitor it during exercise. Then, introduce how to count heart rate on
one’s own and demonstrate how to do that. Explain to the students that they will be
using an equation to figure out beats per minute and then they will use the Google
Classroom data sheet to track their heart rate during different physical activities.
To begin the lesson, I will engage students in a discussion about their prior
knowledge of heart rate and why it's important to monitor it during exercise. I will ask
students if they know what their heart rate is and what it means. I will also ask them
if they have ever tracked their own heart rate on their own, outside of class. I will
show them a short video of me tracking my heart rate after a specific exercise and
then calculating beats per minute and then entering it into the Google Classroom
assignment. The video will be displayed on the classroom projector and will be
followed by a brief discussion on how tracking heart rate can help improve physical
fitness.

Materials:
Equipment for stations.
Video clip on the importance of tracking heart rate during exercise.
Classroom projector.

Directions:
Begin by asking students what they know about heart rate and why it's important to
monitor it during exercise.
Show students how to calculate beats per minute.
Show a short video clip that explains the importance of tracking heart rate during
exercise.
Discuss with the students how tracking heart rate can help improve physical fitness.

Engageme Engagement Assessment:

nt
An assessment strategy that could be used is a class discussion or brainstorming
Assessme
activity. The teacher will ask open-ended questions to prompt students to share
nt
their prior knowledge about heart rate and its importance during exercise. The
teacher will listen and observe the responses of the students to assess their
understanding and misconceptions about the topic.
An informal assessment such as a think-pair-share activity will be used to check for
understanding. After the re-introduction of how to count heart rate, the teacher will
have students work in pairs to discuss what they learned and ask any questions
they may have. The teacher will circulate around the room and listen to student
conversations to assess their understanding of the material and address any
misconceptions.
A formal assessment will be a pre-assessment or a pre-test to gauge students' prior
knowledge and understanding of heart rate and its importance during exercise. This
assessment will include questions such as, "What is heart rate?" "Why is it
important to monitor your heart rate during exercise?" "What are some factors that
can affect your heart rate during exercise?" The results of this assessment will be
used to tailor the lesson to students' individual needs and provide targeted
instruction where needed.

Exploration Exploration:
Explore: Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a different
exercise station, such as jump rope, cones, or hula hoops. Instruct students to count
their heart rate for 15 seconds and remember that number. The teacher will help
with monitoring the 15 seconds as a group and help with the equation of multiplying
the number by four. Then have students record their heart rate data on the
worksheet.

Exploration The heart rate data recorded by the students on the worksheet will serve as an
Assessme assessment tool. The teacher will have the main worksheet projected on the
nt projector to review the data and assess the students' understanding of heart rate
monitoring and their ability to count their own heart rate correctly. The teacher will
use this data to provide feedback to individual students or to the whole class on
areas that need improvement or to reinforce areas where they are doing well.

Explanatio Explanation:
n
Explain: After students have completed the exercise stations, bring the class
together to review the heart rate data and discuss how it can be used to monitor
fitness levels. Introduce the concept of target heart rate zone and guide students
through a mathematical calculation to find their target heart rate based on their age.
Vocabulary used and defined will be heart rate per minute (beats per minute), pulse,
target heart rate, and concepts covered are exertion through exercise and activity.

E Description

Explanatio An assessment strategy that will be used is a short quiz or exit ticket. The teacher
n will provide a few questions related to the target heart rate zone and the
Assessme mathematical calculation on how to find it. These questions can assess the
nt students' understanding of the concept and their ability to apply the mathematical
calculation. The results of the quiz or exit ticket can help the teacher identify any
areas that need to be reviewed or retaught in future lessons.

Elaboratio Elaboration:
n
Elaborate: Give students time to set personal fitness goals based on their heart rate
data and target heart rate zone. Using the heart rate data worksheet and tablets or
laptops, have students track their heart rate during a different physical activity of
their choice, and calculate their target heart rate zone again. Then, have students
communicate their fitness goals and progress to their classmates using technology.

See google classroom excel doc.

Evaluation Evaluation:
Evaluate: Assess student understanding by reviewing their heart rate data and
target heart rate calculations. Observe their ability to count their heart rate per
minute and interpret heart rate data. Evaluate their ability to communicate their
fitness goals and progress to their classmates using technology.
