Objectives The objective of my learning segment is for my students to perform games

and activities and collect data that we can assess together. Throughout the
lesson students will wear a monitor and their heart rate will be assessed
and recorded. By using these and showing the students the data they will
also learn the importance of exercise and a healthy range for their heart
rate.

Engagem Students will be given heart rate monitors in the form of a watch. They will then be
ent shown a picture of examples of certain activities and exercises that should put
them within their range. The students will watch YouTube videos on the use of
heart rate monitors and why being aware of our heart rate is so important.

I will access prior knowledge by asking the questions and using Poll Everywhere
for students to answer. I will give them devices for answering purposes.
PollEv.com/haleyelliott898
“What is your heart rate?”
“What do you think your heart rate will do after performing 30 jumping jacks?”
Increase? Decrease? Stay the same?

Engagem The assessment will be based on the answers from the Poll Everywhere questions.

They will then be instructed to select three or more links that are listed under the
Heart-Health Activity column. The students will then have ample time to research,
read, and discuss with their peers, their findings. The students will then be asked

to collaborate and put together a PDF file that demonstrates to me that they have
an understanding of the research and subject being discussed. They will have
freedom to format the file. Citation will include the link the site that they have
chosen.

The following questions will be posted as a guide as well as a chart

What is Heart Rate?
How can I monitor my heart rate?
Does exercise affect my heart rate?

The students will then be asked to follow a short set of exercises for warm up by
following a YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BM2eOqTtS7Q

This video will allow students to elevate their HR slightly higher than resting and
monitor it by looking at their heart rate monitor.

For presentation purposes I used Prezi and created a slide show where I can
Explanati
explain various components and vocabulary that the students might not
on
understand. I will also answer any questions and clarify any misunderstanding
about heart rate. There are open ended questions imbedded throughout the
presentation that will make the students think at a higher level and connect missing
links on their own.

I will explain to the children to open Microsoft word and go to the top of the
document, click insert>chart> select the line graph, move to the right hand side of
the screen and select edit in Excel. The children will then proceed to the document
in Excel and label just as I have posted the example on the projector.

The children will enter their resting heart rate in the resting heart rate column of the
Excel Document. I will then instruct them to return to the open Word document and
view their data.

The students will then log their “warm up” heart rate.

After a short break they will then be instructed to play a game called 21 jump
street. During this game the children will use a variety of locomotors at several
different fitness levels. After the activities have been completed the students will
then access their monitors and log their heart rate using provided tablets and will
continue to use an excel sheet, logging this data in the “post activity column.

Students will be provided with individual hear rate logs, following the same pattern
used in Excel. I will ask them to track their heart rate for a week during Physical
Education. They will have approximately 20 recorded heart rates over the week. It
will be their responsibility to check it and record during the various activities we will
have throughout the week. They must record 3 daily.
