CATARINA MIOTTO TORTOZA

Did you know that every year, over 100 million animals are burned, paralysed, poisoned,
and tormented in laboratories across the US alone? This is a dark secret that
industries and companies carry with them. In my opinion animal testing shouldn’t be
allowed in today’s society, it is a nasty, terrible way to test a product. Animals don’t
give consent, humans are not more important than animals so therefore animals
should have the right to live and it can lead to inaccurate test results.

Although animals don’t have the ability to talk, express themselves and communicate
with humans they still need to give consent. Animal rights is a philosophy that asserts
that all animals have the right to their own existence and that their most fundamental
needs be protected. No human should be able to take these rights from them,
especially considering the fact that we don’t understand their language. Sadly they
have to rely on humans to make decisions for them which leads to the decision to test
on these poor creatures. Animals are violated when they are part of researchers
because they were not given a choice. People can’t and should not control animal’s
lives and kill animals to satisfy their needs, that is not ethical. We are taking advantage
of their lack of communication.

The improvements in the medical realm frequently overshadow animal testing. Animal
testing was the only practical approach to learn about the human body in the early
stages of society. Ancient Greece physician-scientists such as Aristotle and
Erasistratus, according to the NCBI, conducted experiments on real animals. Galen, a
Greek physician who operated in Rome, used animal experiments to increase
knowledge of anatomical, physiological, disease, and pharmacological. Animals started
being seen as less important than humans . Animals are life savers, they save our lives
and we are alive because of them, they keep our ecosystem working, they provide us
with food and so much more. According to University of Adelaide experts in
evolutionary biology, humans always thought that they were smarter than other living
beings on the planet, but that's just not true "The fact that they may not understand
us, while we do not understand them, does not mean our 'intelligences' are at different
levels, they are just of different kinds. When a foreigner tries to communicate with us
using an imperfect, broken, version of our language, our impression is that they are
not very intelligent. But the reality is quite different," Professor Henneberg says. They
have social and kinaesthetic intelligence. Due to the fact that they are needed to keep
our environment clean, fight climate change and are even good emotional supporters,
they deserve to live. Human beings need to understand that we share this huge
planet with other living beings which also need to be respected.
Testing on animals is not just unethical but can also be unreliable. "Even the most
promising discoveries from animal research generally fail in human trials and are
rarely integrated into clinical practise," according to a 2014 analysis published in the
British Medical Journal. If more than 100 million animals are tested every year the
evidence does not support the legitimacy of animal testing. Animals have different
anatomy than humans and are not the best choice to be tested on for human
necessities. It was also proven that nine out of ten drugs that worked on animals did
not work the same on humans. It is simple, as the world progresses in technology we
have new methods to test that fortunately don’t include animals and that have way
better results. These living species are just different from us so we can’t trust that
what performed well on them will one hundred percent will do the same in our body.

In conclusion, animal testing is cruel and brutal, animals never gave us their concent,
they are living and have rights like living rights humans are not superior in any way,
and is it proven to have unreliable results. Animal testing has been a debatable topic
for years, some people think that it is ethical because we are ‘saving’ humans when
there are other ways to save sick people for example. This way would be by educating
them on how to not get sick, it is as easy as that, why not show them how to eat
healthy, working out the dangers of smoking, drugs, alcohol….This would make drugs in
less demand. Some countries like Australia, Iceland, Norway, South Korea and a lot
more don’t allow animal testing and are doing amazing, which shows that we don’t
nedd it.
