CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.0 Introduction

This chapter presents the background of the study the problem statement of the study, the

objectives of the study, the scope of the study, the research questions, the significance and

importance of the study, and the limitation of the study. The purpose of this study was to

investigate the impact of Jabane supermarket management systems on operational Efficiency.

1.1 Background of the study

With the rapid development of modern science and technology, computer technology has

penetrated all fields and becomes the necessary tools for various industries, especially the

Internet technology promotion and the establishment of the information highway. It makes the

IT industry increasingly shows its unique advantages in the market competition. (Yongcheng and

Mengyao, 2015) they observed that the digital age, there is a huge data information waiting for

processing and transmission, which makes the further development and use of the database is

particularly urgent. As some small and medium-sized supermarkets in the domestic market, they

are falling behind the large and medium-sized supermarkets during the informatization, but for

these enterprises 'resource management, information storage and processing also shows the

urgent need. To adapt market competition, it requires efficient handling and management

methods, so it is indispensable that accelerate the process of the computerization of supermarket

Is for an effective automation of the management of a supermarket. (Nnanyerem G. 2018)

defines The Supermarket Management system is a project that deals with supermarket

automation, and it includes both purchasing and selling of items. Supermarket management

system is the system where all the aspects related to the proper management of supermarket is

done. These aspects involve managing information about the various products, staff, managers,

customers, billing etc. This system provides an efficient way of managing the supermarket

information. Also allows the customer to purchase and pay for the items purchased. This study is

based on the sales transaction and billing of items in a supermarket. This study is to produce

software which manages the sales activity done in a supermarket, maintaining the stock details,

maintaining the records of the sales done for a particular month/year. The users will consume

less time in calculation and the sales activity will be completed within a fraction of seconds

whereas manual system will make the user to write it down which is a long procedure and so

paperwork will be reduced, and the user can spend more time monitoring the supermarket. The

program will be user friendly and easy to use. The system will allow the user when to reorder

fora particular goods.

The system will display all the items whose name start with the letter selected by the user.

managing the supermarket information. Also allows the customer to purchase and pay for the

items purchased. This study is based on the sales transaction and billing of items in a

supermarket.

Seniors have been usually viewed as an unattractive market due to the perception that they had

limited spending power and the image of old people being frail. However, this perception seems

to be short-sighted, because not only will be this market growing for the near future, but new

pensioners with higher income will come to the segment.

To justify studying the seniors´ age group, there are several factors that differentiate them from

other segments.

These factors depend on changes in health, lifestyle and psychographic characteristics resulting

in specific marketplace needs the purchase behaviour of older consumers differs somewhat from

that of their younger counterparts.

This supermarket management system has realized the transmission and control of large goods,

to facilitate the management and decision of sales, and reduce a big burden for supermarkets and

supermarket managers. It also can help to improve the work efficiency of supermarket. Its

requirements is to provide the basic information maintenance function of employees,

memberships and products so that managers can through the function to add, delete, and modify

the basic information of employees and the employees can through it to add, modify and delete

the basic information of memberships and goods. Supermarket management system is very

convenient for manage, input, output, and find the data to make the messy supermarket data to

specific, visualizations, rationalization. In the aspect of software, the supermarket management

system using php language and Oracle as the background database. In the aspect of software,

various configurations in computer including input and output capacity, internal memory and

external memory capacity can meet the requirements of users.

1.2 Statement of the problem

The role of supermarket management system on operation efficiency is to deal with the

automation of supermarket which includes both sales and purchase of items. Supermarket

Management System is developed with the objectives of making the system reliable, easier, fast,

and more informavore. In the manual System, there are number of salespersons faces many
problems e.g., large records-books must be maintained where relevant and irrelevant

information's must be stored which is very untidy and clumsy process. But our System reduces

paper works. On the other hand, there are many inhere. problems that exist in any manual system.

Usually, less efficiency has a great impact on the productivity of any human being keeping the

data up to date. However, the major problem of Jabane supermarket is Poor management system,

they use a manual system that have a lot of difficulties e.g., Time consumption manual systems

are time consumption as the business manager must be keep track of supermarket sales on daily

basics while updating the system manually at the end of the day. Poor communication is one of

the biggest problems in the manual system it requires that employees and managers to write

down each time an item is removed from supermarket. If one employee forgets to mention that

product is removed from the supermarket the manager expects the item to still be available for

customer during a sale.

Employee or salespersons uses large books to store their data that can cause that their data can

loss easily at any time. This will affect the operational efficiency of JABANE supermarket.

1.3 Project Objectives

1.3.1 General Objectives

The General Objective of this study was to ascertain the impact of Jabane Supermarket System

on Operational Efficiency.

1.3.2 Specific Objectives

This study pursued the following three specific research Objectives where:
• To produce software that makes easy record of goods in store and proper identification.

• To identify information or data that is necessary in building the Management Information

for the supermarket management system on operational efficiency performance.

• To produce software which manages the sales activity done in the supermarket on

operational efficiency.

• To develop a financial Management system that will provide easy access payment for

Customers and staffs.

1.4 Research Questions

This study was guided by the following specific research questions:

• How we develop a financial Management system that will provide easy access payment

for customers and staff?

• How we produce software which manages the sales activity done in the supermarket on

operational efficiency?

• how we identify information or data that is necessary in building the Management

Information for the supermarket management system on operational efficiency performance in

Hargeisa Somaliland?
1.5 Significance\importance of the study

The significance of the study is a section in the introduction of your thesis. Its purpose is to make

clear why your study was needed and the specific contribution your research made to furthering

service knowledge in your field. The following individuals will benefit from findings of the

study.

The management system will be of great benefit to supermarkets, and it will improve the

managerial and administrative strength of the business and move the business forward to meet

the demand of times and globalization in this era of technology.

Supermarket staff: This study will help them to get software that will help them manage the sales

activity done in the supermarket, maintain the stock details, and maintain the sales records done

for day-to-day work in Jabane supermarket.

Supermarket managers: The managers will learn new approaches to managing information about

various products, staff, customers and also it will provide how they manage data and information

of supermarket in efficient way.

Researchers and scholars: Researchers and scholars who interested in supermarket management

system and technology can use this study for findings as a basis for further research or for the

development of other supermarket management system.

1.6 The scope of the study

1.6.1 geographical scope

This study will be done to Jabane Supermarket management system to find solution of their

problem on operational efficiency in Hargeisa, Somaliland especially the district Daloodho

branch. The staff of this branch are 3 staffs the owner of this supermarket is Mukhtar Mohamed

Abdi.

1.6.2 Time scope

This study will cover a period of four months March to June 2023, as the research paper

guideline of the faculty indicates. During this date, data will be analyzed and collected from

Jabane supermarket to evaluate the effectiveness of the Jabane Management system in enhancing

operational efficiency.

1.7 Limitations

Research limitations are weaknesses of the study, based on factors that are often outside of your

control as the researcher. These factors could include things like time, access to funding,

equipment, data or participants. When we started this study, we saw a lot of weakness which was

affected our research results which are:

Lack of knowledge: We make interview to the staff and managers when we started the interview,

we had a problem with the staff and managers because it was difficult for them to understand

what we meant by this research, and it took us a long time to them get information from the

research.
Technology barriers: Every system that is built requires that the people working in it have

knowledge of technology, so when we had an interview with the workers and managers, we

found out that they have no knowledge of modern technology and that was a big challenge for us

when we are doing our research.
