OIS-J23 HP element: gasket failures

1. Reason

In high ambient temperature conditions, gasket 1616 6113 00 between the rotor
housing and the outlet bearing housing often gets blown at the oil distribution channel.
When this failure occurs, there is a considerable drop of oil pressure on the balancing
piston with consequently overloading of the male axial bearing. This leads to a
decreased bearing lifetime (approx. 3000 hours)

2. Modification

The modification has been done in 2 phases:

Phase 1, from service stage 1616 6911 91 on:
• O-rings 0663 2111 19 and 0663 7128 00 introduced instead of gasket
1616 6113 00.

Phase 2, from service stage 1616 7098 91 on:

• Balancing piston enlarged
• Separate cooling for compressor element bearings foreseen, not applied in AIP
products
• Shaft ends of male and female rotor adapted (with extra groove in shaft outlet
ends to lead away air leaks to inlet element)

4. Introduction

Phase 1, HP-element 1616 6911 91 is introduced from AIP 358 069 onwards, the new
element is marked with 1616 6911 80 at the data plate, the ‘old’ element was marked
with 1616 6095 80 at the data plate
Phase 2, HP-element 1616 7098 91 is marked with 1616 7098 80 at the data plate
(introduced November, 2001).

5. Field action

When an element 2934 9988 23 fails, there are two options:

• Flat gasket 1616 6113 00 can be replaced
• Or, element 2934 9988 23 can be replaced by element 1616 6911 91
It is not possible to rebuild the old element to the new version, due to a different rotor
housing.

No reimbursement is foreseen.
