TASK PERFFORMANCE:

Irold Jerald A. Sanchez

BSIT-1B

I. Polya’s Strategy

1. How many different rectangles with an area of one-hundred twenty (120) square units can be
formed using unit squares?

2. Suppose thirty-six (36) students signed up for classes during an orientation session. If exactly
twenty- two (22) of them signed up for Chemistry and exactly eighteen (18) of them signed up for
English, how many of them signed up for both Chemistry and English? How many of them signed up
for Chemistry only? How many of them signed up for English only?

3. An online mobile game tournament was facilitated and begins with 1024 players. Each game has
four (4) players, and in each game, only one (1) winner will advance to the next round. How many
games must be played to determine the winner?

ANSWER:
1. There are 8 different kinds of rectangle with an area of 120 square units.
2. Students who signed for both English and Chemistry, A = 4. Students who signed up for Chemistry
only, B = 18
Students who signed up for English only, C = 14.
3. The game needs to be played 5 rounds to determine the ultimate winner of the game.

1. How many different rectangles with an area of one-hundred twenty (120) square units can be
formed using unit squares?

Understand the Problem:

We need to determine the number of rectangles that has total of 120 square units.
Devise a Plan:
We need to work out the factors of 120.

Carry Out the Plan:

1 x 120 = 120
2 x 60 = 120
3 x 40 = 120
4 x 30 = 120
5 x 24 = 120
6 x 20 = 120
8 x 15 = 120
10 x 12 = 120

Then double this so the rectangle is in the opposing orientation= 16

Understand the Problem:

The confusing part is that there are students who signed up for both English and Chemistry. There are
some students who signed up for chemistry only and English only. There are 36 students together.
There are students who signed up for both English and Chemistry.
Let A be the number of students who signed up for both English and Chemistry. There are some
students who signed up for Chemistry only.
Let B be the number of students who signed up for Chemistry only There are some students who
signed up for English only.
Let C be the number of students who signed up for English only.
Devise a Plan:
The number of students who signed up for both English and Chemistry and those signed up for
Chemistry only is 22.
A + B = 22
The number of students who signed up for both English and Chemistry and those signed up for English
only is 18.
A + C = 18
There are 36 students.
A + B + C = 36
Carry Out the Plan:
A + B+ C = 36 Eq 1
A + B = 22 Eq 2
A + C = 18 Eq 3
------------------------------------------
A + A + B + C = 40 --- > Add Eq. 2 and 4
A + (A + B + C) = 40 --- > Group A + B + C
A + 36 = 40 --- > Substitute Eq. 1.
Remember A + B + C = 36
A = 40 - 36 --- > Subtract both sides by 36
A=4
Substitute: A = 4 to Eq. 2, A + B = 22
4 + B = 22
B = 22 - 4
B = 18
Substitute: A = 4 to Eq. 3, A + C = 18
4 + C= 18
C = 18 - 4
C = 14
