Lesson Topic: Polishing performance, increasing accuracy and effect of articulations and dynamics

Prior Knowledge: Upcoming concert, the students can play through all of the pieces but are struggling
with dynamic and articulation accuracy

Materials Needed:

Microphones, speakers, recording software, instrument, music, pencil, highlighter, pre-printed


worksheets, exit slip.

Procedures*

1) Introduction: Ask students why it is important to improve music, point discussion towards
articulations and dynamics.

2) Readiness: Discuss professional ensembles and how articulations are clear and dynamics are
exaggerated.

3) Silent ‘Reading’ Activity: Students will read through their music and circle/mark all dynamics and
articulations with a pencil

4) Discussion / playing their instrument activity: Play through the music, focusing on circled/marked
articulations and dynamics

5) ‘Re-reading’ Activity: Listen to the recording just taken, and as it plays, have students highlight the
articulations and dynamics that could have been performed better/more accurately.

6) Formative Assessment: On a pre-printed worksheet, have students write down which parts could have
been improved, and how the students would improve them.

7) Follow-Up Writing Activity: On the exit slip, write how professional ensembles use dynamics and
articulations to sound their best in their ensemble.
