Ia Develop strategies to address expressive challenges in

a varied repertoire of music, and evaluate their success using feedback

from ensemble peers and other sources to refine performances.

Objective: Students will practice ways to better attack notes by playing through

fragile to develop ways to better play music in an expressive way.

Materials: Instruments, spring concert music, pencils

Procedure: 1. Begin class by articulating a concert F and instruct the students

to listen to each other and try to match the entrance with each

other. As the students become better at this, have the students

attack quieter and quieter, which requires more control of

embouchure and air. After they can attack together quietly, have

the students switch from a tongue attack to a breath attack,

which requires complete control of their air and embouchure.

As the get better at this, ask the student to add their tongue back

to the attack, and the attack should be much cleaner and

together now.

2. Move to measure 9, and work on the students keeping a warm

tone while keeping their entrances together through the use of

their air and embouchure, as worked on in the warmup. If the

students are struggling, refer to the difference between plowing

out a candle and fogging gup glass, the warm and cold air will

change the sound of their instrument.

3. Move to 49 after going through the previous section, this

section requires cold air through the instrument and more

violent attacks. Work to ensure that ALL BRASS STUDENTS

are attacking the same way at the same volume. Demonstrate if

needed.

Assessment: Throughout the lesson, students will have a mix of self-assessment to

critically think about their playing and how to improve upon it, and

teacher feedback so that they understand the issues they may not hear

in their playing and learn how to address them.

Accommodations: Use of highlighters to mark articulations and dynamics.

Choice in modeling, no student has to model for the class if they are

uncomfortable.
