Fabric inspection
Fabric Inspection is an important aspect followed prior to garment manufacturing to avoid
rejects due to fabric quality and faced with an unexpected loss in manufacturing.

Fabric inspection is done for fault/defect rate, fabric construction, fabric weight, shrinkage, end
to end or edge to edge shading, color, hand feel, length/width, print defect and appearance.

Fabric inspection ensures to minimize the rejection of cut panels or rejected garments due to
fabric faults. Cutting inspected and approved fabric ensures not only finished garment quality
but also reduce rejects, improves efficiency and timely deliveries.

Purpose of fabric inspection

The main purpose of fabric inspection is to prevent any rejection at later stages, leading to
unexpected losses in manufacturing. It inspects the fabric construction, color, edge-to-edge
shading, fabric feel, length/width, print defects, appearance to determine the defect rate. As a
result, it minimizes rejections and enhances efficiency and timely deliveries.

Its purpose is to determine the quality and acceptability of fabrics. Generally, garment
manufacturers rely on their fabric suppliers to deliver quality fabrics so that they can produce
quality garments. If the quality is not checked properly at the initial stages, the end product will
suffer.

Fabric inspection also lets you determine the width of the fabric rolls. Based on it, you can
easily group the fabric rolls according to the various width sizes. Thus, you can ensure optimum
utilization of fabric with a proper marker and lay division.

Fabric inspection machine

A machine that is used for fabric inspection and fabric checking in is known as fabric inspection
machine. The fabric inspection machines facilitate in fabric inspection process, by mechanical
unrolling and rerolling of fabric. The fabric inspection machines also come with fabric length
counter (length measurement), which measures fabric length while fabric checking is done.
Fabric Inspection Machines are designed to check weaving, knitting defects and shade
variations in fabrics. Checking dimensional accuracy in width and length are also possible with
these inspection machines.

Fabric inspections machines are equipped with all necessary features like tensionless handling,
accurate length measuring, appropriate illumination, Straight roll selvedge, variable roll
hardness, auto cutting of fabrics in case big rolls are converted in batch rolls. Machines are
equipped AC motor thus ensuring saving of power.

A fabric inspection machine comes with an illuminated panel, which measures and rotates
fabric length. It also marks the distance between any defects on the well-inspected fabric roll.
One major purpose of a good quality fabric inspection machine is to check the fabric’s tension,
which is vital to know before spreading and cutting operations. These advanced machines for
fabric inspection are helpful for fabric manufacturers to check the manufactured quality of
fabrics. It even helps in additional quality checks before sending fabric materials for further
processing.

Manual fabric Inspection Machine:

The manual fabric inspection machine is for elementary-level inspection. It checks fabric’s visual
inspection on slanted or horizontal inspection tables. The inspector is likely to pull the fabric
onto the illuminated inspection table for marking, locating, and recording any defects during
the manual inspection. A fabric guide roll is often fixed on the machine’s top for facilitating the
smooth flow of the fabric.

Thanks to the edge guide installation with the meter counter, it is easier to get accurate
measurements. Usually, the mounted fabric rolls are behind the inspection table appropriately
re-rolled and light after full inspection. Furthermore, the manual machine is a relatively low-
cost, simple, and entry-level type of equipment.
Process Of Fabric Inspection And Grading
Generally, most factories take a sample of rolls from the entire fabric lot to examine
thoroughly. If the sample passes the test, the quality inspector checks the rest of the fabric
visually while spreading it on the cutting table. At times, they also tend to inspect the fabric
after the cutting process to ensure quality.

However, the ideal procedure for quality check is to inspect the fabric full fabric length before
carrying out the cutting process. You inspect, map, and mark defects before spreading and
cutting the fabrics because:

It accelerates the spreading process as the spreader doesn’t need to inspect the fabric

The cutter’s productivity increases due to advanced marking of defects

It lets you conveniently cut out the patterns around the defects so that the final garments are
free of any flaws

Also, instead of a manual check, using fabric inspection machines offer better defect visibility
and reduces time and energy deployed. The most widely used fabric inspection systems in the
textile industry are:

10-point system
