PE1 KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL BASE
I gained my initial theory based 1.3.3, 1.3.5, 1.3.6
knowledge and developed my analytical 2.3.11, 3.3.14
skills from University of Moratuwa where
I obtained my bachelor’s degree in
Electrical Engineering.

Load current calculations in varying

voltage systems required clear
PE1.1 Comprehensive, theory-based understanding of the engineering
understanding of the underpinning fundamentals of direct current.
natural and physical sciences and the
engineering fundamentals applicable to Understanding of vector diagrams was
the engineering discipline required to make decision on
interchanging phases on a zig-zag
transformer.

I designed the backup protection scheme

for capacitor banks. The theory of
grading the protection functions were
applied during this exercise.

I manually calculated the battery sizing 1.3.11, 2.3.12, 3.3.13

chart as per IEEE-1115-2000 standard. It
was a recursive calculation method. I was
able to understand the concept of the
calculation by reading the standard. I
arrived at the same answer as the
software.

Mapping between RTD sensor

PE1.2 Conceptual understanding of the
information, 4-20mA signals and
mathematics, numerical analysis,
absolute values require numerical
statistics and computer and
analysis. This was required during
information sciences which underpin
programming of transducers and SCADA
the engineering discipline
components.

Integrating IED’s into IEC61850 SCADA

required conceptual understanding of
computer and information science. I was
able to master the connectivity concept
when adding the capacitor bank IED’s
into the local SCADA system.

In the capacitor bank project I 2.3.10, 1.3.18, 1.3.20,

programmed the GE F650 relays entirely. 1.3.22
PE1.3 In-depth understanding of It gave me a thorough and deep
specialist bodies of knowledge within understanding into relay programming
the engineering discipline and IEC 61850 communication protocol.

By commissioning battery banks I

Hettiarachchige Malaka Gunasekara Page 44 | 50
educated myself with the do’s and don’ts
of batteries. My in depth understanding
saved time and effort by commissioning
the battery banks in the shortest possible
and immediate acceptance by end client.

After the successful completion of the 2.3.6

CE2 I had a better understanding of
capacitor bank systems. I also saw many
points that could improve further from
PE1.4 Discernment of knowledge
my own system. So I developed a
development and research directions
document to simplify the control scheme
within the engineering discipline
which can be used for future projects. It
was very much useful in a future project
and was much praised by the
management.
In CE3 I directly contacted suppliers for
purchasing of high voltage equipment. I 3.3.1, 3.3.15, 2.4.2
was required to have a knowledge of
procurement activities to make
beneficial decision for the company. I got
familiar with purchase orders, letter of
credits, bank guarantees and shipping
documents.

Labour management crucial part in CE3.

Instead recruiting skilled workers I
outsourced it to a labour supplier
company. For certain defined tasks like
PE1.5 Knowledge of contextual factors cable pulling I made work contracts
impacting the engineering discipline instead of daily wages.

A satisfied client usually makes the tasks

easy for a contractor. Therefore in CE2 I
tried to manage the demanding client by
slightly extending beyond my scope of
work. It proved to be successful when
the client immediately accepted the
facility with minimum defect
notifications.

In CE3 I was full time at site during 3.3.6, 3.3.7, 2.3.11,

critical work. Work during interruptions 1.3.8
and work which required high level of
safety supervision was critical as per the
PE1.6 Understanding of the scope,
norms of the power engineering
principles, norms, accountabilities and
industry. I was accountable for the
bounds of contemporary engineering
technical tasks and I understood that
practice in the specific discipline
accountability couldn’t be transferred.

In CE2 I graded backup protection

according to the accepted practice in CEB

Hettiarachchige Malaka Gunasekara Page 45 | 50

and within the bounds of protection
principles.

Developing load cycle for non-

continuous loads require understanding
of the operations of a grid substation.
Further all calculations were carried out
as per the industry accepted
international standards.

techniques, tools and resources
I used Omicron CMC 256 for relay
testing.

I used Enervista software to program GE

relays and export .iec files for SCADA
communication.

In CE2 the schematic designs followed

standard GE panel schematics as much as 2.3.8, 1.3.2, 3.3.2,
possible. The principles of DC distribution 3.3.3, 3.3.4
remained unchanged. The schematics
were developed systematically
maintaining the flow of standard GE
panel design concepts intact.
PE2.3 Application of systematic
engineering synthesis and design The DC system design report was created
processes with each step clearly mentioned for
better understanding of the client in CE1.

In CE3 the SLD, Layouts and sections

were designed and submitted in an
orderly manner to client for a smoother
design approval.

3.4.1, 1.3.15, 3.2.4,
In CE3 I developed responsibility
matrices to commissioning engineers and
technical officers. Further I submitted a
weekly schedule to the client and
followed up on my staff to stay on target.

In CE1 I prepared formats for battery cell

readings. This helped the electricians to
PE2.4 Application of systematic take the correct readings of the battery
approaches to the conduct and cells in an efficient manner.
management of engineering projects
I prepared a project schedule for myself
in CE3 and kept track of progress. I also
prepared a major equipment list to keep
track of procurement activities. This
helped me to get the material delivered
on time.

PE3 PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

I considered safety as the number one 3.3.4, 3.3.6, 3.4.2,
priority in all tasks. I always ensured that 3.4.3, 1.4.3, 2.4.2
proper earthing tools were available at
site.

I communicated with the client

personnel and demonstrated full
accountability for my staff.
PE3.1 Ethical conduct and professional
I never delivered substandard products
accountability
or handed over faulty systems
deliberately.

I took the work load into my shoulders

during instances where project was
bound to get delayed. By doing so I was
able to finish the projects on time.

2.4.3, 3.2.4, 1.3.2,

Communication with overseas suppliers 1.3.14
