ASSIGNMENT No. 1

Course Title: Power Electronics Course Code: EEP-468

Class: BEE – 7A CLO: 3
Course Instructor: DR. MUHAMMAD RAZA Date: 15-Oct-2023
Due Date: 30-Nov-2023 Max. Marks: 20 Points

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Individual Viva will be taken at the time of assignment submission.

2. The assignment is a complex engineering problem.

CEP ATTRIBUTES

1. Depth of Knowledge
2. Depth of Analysis

Objective:

Design the DC-DC converter for renewable application.

System Description:

Power electronics is a critical element of the modern power system. Specifically, it is being used in
all aspects of renewable energy system. Such as, AC-AC converter is required to feed energy from
wind turbine to grid or a DC-DC converter is utilized to increase the PV module voltage level at
the grid level. A DC-DC converter regulates voltage such that either it step-up, step-down, or do
both. To understand the practical aspects of power converters, you are required to design and
develop DC-DC converters having PV maximum power point tracking algorithm.

A two-port DC-DC converter diagram is shown in Figure 1. Terminal voltage must be selected
according to the converter type chosen. The converter design should satisfy the following
specification.
i. Rated voltage of terminal-1, 12V with 10% tolerance
ii. Rated voltage of terminal-2, 60V with 10% tolerance
iii. Rated power, 100W
iv. The converter must be able operate in both closed and open loop control
configuration.
v. Choose an appropriate microcontroller that would provide efficient float point
arithmetic computation feature and the circuit board should have ICSP and UART
capability for debugging purposes.
vi. Design must have snubber protection.
vii. Overall efficiency should be above 80%.
In the report, you are required to provide both simulation and hardware results.
