Together with the loss of their original cultures and customs, their forced conversion to Christianity, the
imposition of military conscription on men, and the lasciviousness of Spanish invaders toward women, the
Filipinos paid the price for these with their lives and freedoms. By using unfair taxation and land rent, Spain
mistreated its population. Since they were seen as a lower kind of human, they were brutalized by friars and
authorities who wanted to make them into mindless vassals.
