Competency: Express concentrations of solutions quantitatively by preparing different
concentrations of mixtures according to uses and availability of materials.
S7MT-Id-3
Skill: Express
Content: Concentrations of Solutions
Methodology: Solving
Context: Solutions available at home
Materials: Salt, sugar, vinegar, water, weighing balance, beaker, graduated cylinder,
evaporating dish, plastic spoon, funnel
Expectation: At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to express concentrations of
solutions quantitatively by preparing different concentrations of mixtures
according to uses and availability of materials.
Assessment Statement: Express concentrations of solutions quantitatively by solving the
concentrations of mixtures available at home.

Learning Episode 1:

A. Motivation

1. This morning we are going to express concentrations of solutions quantitatively by

preparing different concentrations of mixtures according to uses and availability of
materials.
2. it is important that we will know how to express concentrations of solutions
quantitatively by preparing different concentrations of mixtures so that we can apply
it in our daily activities such as cooking, preparing juices, coffee and milk.
3. At the end of the lesson, you are expected to express the different concentration of
solutions found at home.

B. Review/Drill
1. The teacher will review the learners of the four fundamental operations (addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division).
a. 234.00 + 12.05= 246.05
b. 27.50 – 17.30=10.20
c. 234 * 12.2= 2854.8
d. 12 / 25 = 0.48
2. The teacher will also review the students on how to convert percent to decimal and
vice versa
a. 30% = 0.30
b. 0.48 = 48%
3. The teacher will drill the students on the computation related to the previous
activity they had.
a. Express the amount of “betadine” needed to prepare 200 ml of 40% iodine solution
“betadine”.
Sol’n:

Since the given are:

amount of solution = 200 mL concentration of solution = 40%, we will

rearrange the formula as:

Amount of solute= (200mL) (40%) ÷100

Amount of solute = 80g iodine

Generalization: To prepare the solution, I need 80 g iodine then add water to make a
200 ml of 40% iodine solution.

Learning Episode 2. Modeling

The teacher will demonstrate to the students how to prepare a 100 ml of 30% salt solution.
The teacher will first compute how much salt is needed to prepare a 100 ml of 30% salt
solution.

Solution:
100

Since the given are: amount of solution = 100 ml concentration of solution = 30%, we will
rearrange the formula as:

amount of solute = (100 ml) (30%) ÷ 100 amount of solute = 30 g salt

3. The teacher will now prepare the 100 ml of 30% salt solution. The steps are as
follows:
a. Weigh 30 g of salt.
b. Put the salt on the beaker with graduation.
c. Pour water up to 100 ml, then stir until salt is completely dissolved.

Generalization: To prepare the solution, I need 30 g of salt then add water to make a 100 ml
of 30% salt solution.

Learning Episode 3:

A. Guided Practice (Triad)

Let the students prepare a 300ml, 20% vinegar solution.

Ask the students how much vinegar is needed to prepare the required solution.
Teacher will guide the students how to derive the formula to solve for the amount of solute
from the formula:
100

Deriving the formula: amount of solute = (amount of solution) (concentration of solution) ÷

100
So amount of solute = (300 ml) (20%) ÷ 100 amount of solute = 60 ml

Generalization: Now, you can prepare the required solution by mixing 60 ml vinegar to yield
a 300 ml of 20% vinegar solution.

Learning Episode 4:
A. Independent Practice
Express/compute concentration of solutions on the given word problems and prepare
solutions using materials found at home.

1. Prepare a 500 ml, 15% sugar solution. (Ans: 75g sugar)

Solution:

amount of solute = (amount of solution) (concentration of solution) ÷ 100 amount of solute

= (500ml) (15%) ÷ 100

amount of solute = 75 g sugar

Steps in preparing the 500 ml, 15% sugar solution.

1. Weigh 75g of sugar.
2. Put the sugar on the beaker with graduation.
3. Pour water up to 500 ml, then stir until sugar is dissolved.

Generalization: To prepare the solution, I need 75g sugar then add water to make a 500ml of
15% sugar solution.

Learning Episode 5: Evaluation

1. The teacher will let the students prepare 200 ml, 10% lemonade or other solutions
available at home.
2. Teacher will instruct the students to do the same as what the teacher did in the modelling.
3. When all is done, let the students report to the class their output, one by one.
