QUARTER 1– MODULE 5
(Week 7)
QUANTITATIVE
CONCENTRATION OF
SOLUTIONS
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It will learn you on
how to solve problems involving the concentration of solutions. The scope of this
module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you
read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

As you go through this module, you will be able to:

MELCs: Express concentration of solutions quantitatively by preparing different
concentration of mixtures according to uses and availability of materials. Kto12
BEC CG: S7MT-Id-3
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. to describe the concentrations of solutions quantitatively.
2. explain the difference among percent by mass and percent by volume.
3. solve problems involving different expressions of concentration of solution.

Concentration of Solutions
Lesson

1 (Percent by Volume and Percent by Mass)

What’s In

Good day students! In the previous module, you have learned how solutions
are formed and that there is the limits to the amount of solute that can be dissolved
in a solvent
at a given temperature and pressure. In this lesson, you will learn how to
quantitatively express the amount of solute present in any solution.

2
What’s New

Do you know we can express the concentration of solution qualitatively or

quantitatively? By simply describing their appearance or by its exact number of
components of solute and solvent.
Activity1:
Directions: Write the following concentration of solution if it is expressed
qualitatively or quantitatively.
________________1. Adding 3 mL of food coloring turned 250 mL of water blue
________________2. 30g of sodium chloride is dissolved in water to make 90g of
solutions.
________________3. A pack of chocolate powder is placed in a cup of water.
________________4. The water became warmer.
________________5. We needed 14 floor tiles for our model room.

Are you now interested with our lesson? I hope that you can apply your
analytical and mathematical skills to the activities we will discuss in this module.
Are you excited? Let us start!

What is It

What are quantitative methods of expressing concentration of solutions?

We can describe the concentration of solutions qualitatively (by observing their

appearance) and quantitatively (by comparing the number of drops per volume of
water). Therefore, we need more exact, quantitative methods of expressing
concentration. The concentration describes the relative amounts of solute and
solvent in a given volume of solution. When there is a large amount of dissolved
solute for a certain volume of solvent, the solution is concentrated. A dilute solution
has a small amount of dissolved solute in comparison to the amount of solvent.

You can express concentration in other ways such as:

1. Percent by Volume- is defined as the volume of solute present in 100 mL of
solution (% v/v)
𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒
Eq.1: 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑦 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 = × 100
𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛
or
𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒
Eq.2:𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑦 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 = 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒+𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡 × 100

3
Sample Problem 1: A contains 50 ml of ethanol in 300 ml alcohol of solution. What
is the percent by volume concentration of the solution?

Given: Solution:
Volume of solute= 50 mL 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒
𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑦 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 = × 100
𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛
Volume of solution=300 mL
% by volume=? 50 𝑚𝐿
= × 100
300 𝑚𝐿
= 0.16 x 100
= 16 %

Take note! The volumes of the solute, solvent, and solution must be expressed in the same units.

2. Percent by Mass- is defined as the amount of solute in each mass of solvents. It

is expressed as grams of solute per 100 grams of solution (% m/m).
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒
Eq.1: 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 = × 100
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛
or
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒
Eq.2:𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒+𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡 × 100

Sample Problem 2: What is the percent by mass of a salt solution by dissolving 11 g

of salt in 80 g of solutions?

Given: Solution:
Mass of solute= 11 g 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒
𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 = × 100
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛
Mass of solution=80 g 11 𝑔
= × 100
% by mass=? 80 𝑔
= 0.1375x 100
= 13.75 %

Take note! The masses of the solute, solvent, and solution must be expressed in the same units.

Labels of products sold often show the concentration of solute expressed as

percent (%) by volume or mass. The alcohol used as a disinfectant is a solution of
70% ethyl or isopropyl, meaning 70mL alcohol. There are also solutions sold as
40% ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol.
Vinegar is often labeled as “5% acidity”, which means that it contains 5
grams of acetic acid in 100 g of vinegar.
Pure gold is referred to as 24 karats. Jewelry that is said to be 18 karats
contains 18g of gold for every 24g of the material, the remaining 6g consists of the
other metal like copper or silver. This material has a concentration of 75% gold,
that is [18/24/ (100)],14 karat (14K) gold contains 14g gold and 10 g of another
metal, making it 58.3% gold.
Concentration determines by the formula:
Concentration= amount of solute ÷ amount of solution

Solution= solute + solvent

1kg= 1000g
