For my paper I have chosen to select the painting “Paris street: Rainy day” by GUSTAVE

CAILLEBOTTE. This painting was painted in 1877 on an oil canvas that is 83-1/2 by 108 inches
wide. It displays people walking on an intersection on a very rainy day which seems to be a busy
day in Paris. Everybody is wearing black or dark colors with an umbrella and it seems to be a
wealthy part of town also by the way they are dressed.
This painting is a perfect example of a two-dimensional space. The main thing that screams the
most that it is a two-dimensional space is the building in the background because it has a middle
point that goes into two directions on the intersection. It also includes a horizon line on the base
of the building that spans across the whole painting. Also, the images in the foreground have
very faint shadows going a little bit to the right which means the light source is coming from the
left. You can clearly see the gentlemen with his wife has light on the left side of his body but not
on his right. Another example is highlighting the street to make it seem that it is wet or slick and
the sun is reflecting off it. Gustave did a great job showing and being consistent with light in this
oil painting.
In this painting there are horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines shown throughout it. The
diagonal lines point to the main points of focus. For example, the buildings on the outside point
to the middle showcasing the building in the middle which also has Diagonal lines. Those lines
point to the back creating the illusion of depth for the streets connecting to the intersection. The
horizontal lines combined with the vertical lines create up the street of the painting but is stopped
by a vertical line to make up the sidewalk. Also, the painting is made up of actual lines therefore
Gustave did not try the method of using implied lines.
