SODIUM CHLORIDE
OBJECTIVE
This standard covers the storage and handling of all types of sodium chloride in solid form.
The information is important for Process safety and product quality.
This standard applies to any P&G site using Sodium Chloride.
For safety specifics and detailed chemical behaviour of the material, the appropriate supplier’s MSDS
(Material Safety Data Sheet) should be referred to.
This standard serves to form the basis for plant specific work instructions or standard operating procedures
to created by the receiving plant as necessary.
MATERIAL DESCRIPTION
Sodium chloride, also known as salt, common salt, table salt or halite (below), is an ionic compound with the
formula NaCl, representing equal proportions of sodium and chlorine. Sodium chloride is a raw material
which may be incorporated into our products or intermediates as is or as solutions (Brine).
MATERIAL CHARACTERISTICS

Boiling Point(Deg C) 1413
Particle Density (g/ml) Up to 2.165 at 20 Deg C
Bulk density (g/ml) 1.0 to 1.5
Solubility in water 36 g / 100 cc water at 20°C
Additional properties Raw or Crude salt contains higher impurities

STORAGE & HANDLING
Sodium chloride may be handled in small bags, big bags or tank cars, and added into the finished product
detergents via a standard (big bag) dump point or a receiving silo and day bin,
Material of Construction
Silos: There are no specific requirements
Feeders: MOC is SS304 material, Screw conveyer
Gaskets/Valves: Gate or Butter fly valves with SS304 make (non corrosive) and Gaskets are of rubber made
Line Clearance
There are no specific requirements
SODIUM CHLORIDE
All deliveries must be accompanied with the correct documentation agreed between the Supplier and P&G
If delivered in small bags like paper sack, plastic or laminated polywoven bags:
Sodium chloride must be stored in sealed dry clean paper sacks.
Pallets of paper sacks must not be stacked more than 3 pallets on top of each other.
Pallets must be stored, in dry conditions and away from strong odours such as perfume or perfumed product
Each pallet of paper sacks must be labelled with the shipping name and RMS number and supplier name.
If material arrives at a P&G location caked or lumped it may possible to rework the material. It is the
responsibility of the receiving plant to establish if this is feasible and identify a qualified operation to carry
out the work.
Shelf-life
Salt is chemically stable for 2 years and if stored correctly, product should flow freely from bags without
caking or clumps for 60 days from date of shipment. We recommend a maximuj storage life of 9 months. If
expired, samples should be taken from each expired bag and analyze all CQI items and Physicals
(Appearance and Odor). If result passed according to RMS, then shelf life can be extended for 3 months
(from last expiration date). If failed, or expired again scrap or send back to supplier
