Developer
The main course of this module is Apprenticeship and Exploration in Arts
What I Need to Know
Production ( Visual arts, Media Arts, and Applied Arts ).

These learning materials are based on the Most Essential Learning

Competencies (MELC, DepEd 2020) that are developed in a form of 4 modules
in the duration of eight (8) weeks.
This module is subdivided into four modules based on the most essential
learning competencies that a student must learn in apprenticeship. Brief
discussion of lessons, practice exercises, and guided readings are also
included in this module to enhance learning regarding art safety during actual
art production.

ABOUT THE MODULE

The contents of this module regarding the nature of the apprenticeship
are a discussion of the proficiency level applied in the correct principles and
techniques in the production of projects in apprenticeship. It also includes the
proper usage and selection of art materials, execution of techniques, and
presentation of artwork created.
The module contains learning activities that will guide you in performing
the tasks needed in this module. Essential information on skills, knowledge,
potential, and experiences to any art-related fields are explained in this module.
The significance of this distance learning material will give you a
combination of basic instructions which you will need to read carefully before
completing the tasks provided before proceeding to the next level.
NOTE: Do not skip the module. Next module will be given to you upon
the completion of the previous module.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

WHAT’S IN
The previous lessons of apprenticeship have been a keystone in
establishing the lessons in the future activities. The basic information about
apprenticeship in the arts, its implications to the student-apprentice, their
workplace environment, the people involved, their roles and responsibilities are
the essential components in future activities. It also comprises basic art
production of art safety and security, proper usage and handling of art
materials, tools, equipment, and resources, where significant meaning are
derived from it.
Tick the level (Table 1) of how the following components is important in
the production of projects in apprenticeship.
Table 1: Apprenticeship components Slightly Moderately Highly

Artist-mentor and the creatives

Significant meaning of art making
procedures and techniques
Roles, responsibilities, and chain of
accountability

Safety and security procedures

These are the essential elements needed in complying with the

performance tasks required in the succeeding lessons.

WHAT’S NEW
In apprenticeship, a student is being trained in the same manner as a
worker in a creative industry environment. The apprenticeship is a casual
opportunity for a learner to become skilled in their field of art specialty. This is
where a student-apprentice is given hands-on work, an opportunity to discover
their potential, and a chance to become highly proficient into their chosen field
of interest.

Applying the correct principles and proper techniques in the production

of art projects could determine what level of proficiency an artist or a performer
can exhibit. The level of your knowledge, skills, potential, and work experience
shall lead you to distinguish the career path you are capable of (e.g., art
entrepreneur, business creative, art trainers, educators, professional
artists/designers, or a community art enthusiasts) in the creative industry.

6
WHAT IS IT
What is the proficiency level?
A proficiency level is the description of what you can do in a particular
art production applying various design principles and proper techniques in your
chosen field of interest.

How do we exhibit a level of proficiency?

Good principles and techniques in managing skills, utilizing individual
talents, and capabilities applied in the production of art projects must be
developed to attain outstanding proficiency level in producing arts in the
creative industry.

A level of proficiency is exhibited when a student-apprentice can do and

can demonstrate a particular competency in any art related production work
during the apprenticeship.

Several stages of proficiency level in achieving certain tasks are

introduced that range to a particular level such as: expert, advanced, average,
basic and limited. Developing your skills and competence in your chosen art
field are relatively a manifestation of being a proficient student-apprentice in the
creative workplace.

Skills. These are the specific learned abilities that are required to
perform something. It includes technical, communication, and artistic skills.

Competence. These are the knowledge, behaviors, and other personal

qualities that enable you to perform tasks successfully in a job. It includes good
practices, creative thinking, ability to innovate, and good personal relationships
in the workplace environment. These are the competency levels that a person
must fulfill in a specific role and function in the workplace.

How important is the level of proficiency in your respective art field?

Employers, clients, and customers are looking for these potentials and
talents who can demonstrate excellent and competent skills and abilities such
as skills in communication, leadership, interpersonal relationships, and
initiative, with a strong work ethic, and capable of producing quality art projects.
And these are the bases for the creative industry to consider when selecting
applicants fitted to work for them.

What are the skills and abilities to develop in art production?

Visual art skills and competencies encompasses a variety of expressions
of thoughts, interests, attitudes, emotions, and ideas. Visual artists and
practitioners generally fall to be designers, fine artists, etc. Taking
apprenticeship in the arts sustains the development of skills, concepts, and
passion in arts.
7
Being a successful artist, achieving a high level of technical competence,
being sensitive to artistic style, developing a broad knowledge of art history and
design trends, recognizing individual roles in the society, work preparedness
and readiness are highly expected. Here are few skills in any related arts fields:

A. Artistic and Aesthetic Skills. It is how you see, draw, and understand form
when creating arts. It also includes visualizing shapes, relationships, and its
functions. Mastering use of color, space, and line. Creative in manipulating
elements. Explaining and analyzing abstract ideas into a visual form and
dynamic forms. Applying theories and principles of composition and
understanding current trends and issues in arts and design. These skills are
applicable to a wide range of production industries such as textile and
jewelry designing, illustrating, and designing book cover and illustrations,
and photo taking.

B. Technical Skills. You must know how to demonstrate the qualities,

limitations of each medium, and working in a variety of media used during
art production; and understanding very well the impact of the creative
industry in attaining a high level of craftsmanship and proficiency in art
making. It also includes proficiency in drawing, sketching, making models,
and photographing artwork. Skills such these are essential in designing
medical equipment or scientific illustrators, sketching real pictures in
assistance to legal investigations or courtroom cases, animating/cartooning
objects, designing computer graphics (signs, publications, and corporate
logo), model and industrial designing (product, package, and furniture).

C. Analytical and Communication Skills. Knowing how to gather, analyze

and interpret information with multiple perspectives in viewing current issues
and events. You must know how to utilize options, to present, display and
explain ideas creatively. Preparing a comprehensive portfolio, utilizing
digital media, and marketing artwork are also an advantage. During
apprenticeships, transactions are made, and one can be able to
communicate visually and create instructions clearly. Exhibiting these levels
of proficiency manifests art related work such as designing websites, writer,
communicator, lecturer as what an art historian/professor does, and
coordinating exhibition.

D. Interpersonal Skills. You must learn how to solve problems encountered

during apprenticeship and to collaborate with peers, co-workers, and
networking with co-artists in the industry. During apprenticeship, a student
must know how to assess the client or customer needs so they can be able
to manage design and product making. In the entire art production,
understanding economic and legal issues regarding art production are also
a must.
