Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

The situation I plan on researching is whether or not it is a smart strategic decision for General
Motors to follow the mainstream initiatives to downsize their efforts towards fuel ran vehicles,
and put majority of focus on all electric vehicles. Considering all electric vehicles are fairly new
to the market, there is plenty of learning curves and innovations to be weary about jumping
completely into the electric market. I will be observing this scenario in the position of an external
professional consultant.

2) Describe how the politics of the organization influenced the situation.

This is ultimately where the situation gets the most complex and rigorous. Politics will be the
biggest obstacle in attempting to keep engineering focused on fuel efficiency as the world’s
initiative is going green and electric focused. There will be political battles from internal political
structures as well as external. Considering the fact that there are global politics involved, I think
that without the right people in the right positions of power, the politics will ultimately influence
and dictate the outcome.

In all honesty, the internal politics will essentially consist of the people with the most seniority,
as I have worked in the automotive industry and so much political backing comes from years of
experience and their interconnected networks. When it comes to the internal politics, it will take
serious consideration in strategy as to learning the lay of the land. Along with the organizational
hierarchy, there will definitely be power games throughout regional locations throughout the
world.

3) Recommend how you would use organizational politics for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.

In regards to how I would utilize the political aspects of the very large organization, I feel
confident I would be able to manage and work through the political structures and roles in each

at one location. But there is absolutely no way at the level of experience and knowledge I have
currently, that I would be able to strategize who and what to focus on in the political spectrum of
GM. Considering not only having to learn and interact with each of the executives and their
teams, and departments, on a global level, I lack expertise in how to effectively manage the
complexities. Currently, my best course of action would be to assess and analyze how to provide
proof of above average financial growth and profits, along with scientifically proven data
aligning with the long term effects of making fuel engines more efficient.
