Let Us Reflect

Filipino pop songs mainly referred to songs popularized during 60s and
in the 70s especially those in the ballad form (Wikipedia, 2020). During the
time when American influence was at its pick, some local artists continued to
strive for a distinct sound that could be referred to as “Filipino” or the “Manila
Sound” which flourished through the 80s. This was popularized by artists
who up to now are still making noise in the Philippine music industry.
Like Pilita Corrales, Nora Aunor, Basil Valdez, Freddie Aguilar, Rey Valera
and other emerging artists.
At about this period when the Organisasyon ng mga Pilipinong Mang-
aawit (OPM), was created to address the needs of Filipino popular artists. OPM
also stood for Original Pilipino Music that handle for music composed and/or
performed by Filipinos, even with its eventual use of English lyrics (Baes, n.d).
With its struggle to probe better search for Filipino distinction in popular
music, some groups in 90s formed to write and create their own music. This
effort gave birth to create Brown music (a kind of counterpart to the African-
American “Black music”. Like Ryan Cayabyab made his way to popularize
Filipino sound and Joey Ayala fused indigenous musical elements with foreign
pop idioms took off to enable non-mainstream artists.
As the decades have past, more and more alternative artists entered
into the mainstream in continuing to sustain Philippine Pop Music until
today.
Congratulations for finishing this module! You have accomplished
Module 2 and you did a great job! I hope you will continue it throughout the
whole module.
