OC SOP: CANOPY SPRAYING – LEAF EATING INSECT CONTROL VER: DRAFT

GAP REF: REVIEWED DATE:

OC SOP REF: - DATE PUBLISHED:

OBJECTIVE
To eradicate/control population leaf eating insects in young and immature areas.

DESCRIPTION
This SOP will describe the procedures for leaf eating insect control using canopy spraying. Examples of leaf
eating insects are bagworms (Metisa plana, Mahasena corbetii, Pteroma pendula), caterpillars (Darna trima,
Setora nitens), beetles (Apogonia spp., Adorotus spp.) and grasshoppers (Valanga spp.).

WORKFLOW
Water tanks are sent to application fields if designated refilling points are far away.
All equipment are checked before dispatching to field and to be washed and maintained
after application. *(Cypermethrin has organic solvent based components, will erode plastic
PREPARATION based materials.)
WORKS

Applicators to wear apropriate PPE

Application area based on intervals and needs.Application activity to be monitored ny
Mandore / Supervisor to prevent missed out rolls.
APPLICATION Mandore/supervisor to ensure proper in-field refill and premix.
AND CHEMICALS

Mandore / Supervisor / Assistant to monitor quality of application by observing spray

technique, adequacy of liquid applied and area of application.
Costing to be done and compiled by Supervisor and Assistant.
MONITORING

Frequency and needs of application based on GAP, census data and field conditions.
To monitor with census data.
ANALYSIS AND Repeat workflow process.

CATEGORY DESCRIPTION
REPLANT, IMMATURE

Target area. - Adequate volume for canopy coverage

can’t be standardize by year of planting in
Paloh Estate due to the following reasons:
 The canopy of the palms varies greatly
due to various planting materials and
clones.
 To a certain extent, the morphology of
the palms differs.

- Hence, the application volume is ranged

and calibrated by fields and determined in-
field during application.

- Discharge from nozzle must be dispersed to

the underside of the fronds at the areas
indicated in the example shown (yellow
highlight). All areas including the canopy
on the interrow area are to be covered.

 Topside of fronds are sprayed only when palm

height is permissible

- In general, the range of chemical required

for canopy spraying volume are:
Palm age Volume range (ml)
< 1 year 500-1000
2-3 years 1000-2000
>3 years 2000-3000

- Workers are required to walk further in

toward the palm inter-rows from the paths
during application to ensure a full coverage
of the canopy away from the path.

EQUIPMENT SETUP

Choice of equipment is largely based on the productivity and suitability of application area.

Piston pumps powered by a petrol engine is used in practice due to flexibility, reliability and power. However,
maintenance is still necessary due to wear and tear from long operating hours.

PARTS DESCRIPTION
STARTER ROPE To change immediately if any signs of fraying is noticed.
CARBURETOR AND SPARK To be cleaned and check routinely during oil change or if the machine is
PLUG caught in a heavy rain.
PULLY BELT To check any damages. Change if damages area found.
ENGINE AND PUMP OIL To change and service 2 months once.
PUMP VALVES To check if there are any leakages from pump. If found leakages are due
to pump valves, change immediately.
PIPING AND GASKETS To check daily for any breakages and leakages.

CHEMICALS

To premix and apply as per GAP and manufacturer recommended dosages. Preferably a penetrant is added for
bagworm application and a sticker for caterpillars, beetles and grasshoppers.

In general, chemicals used are calculated and premixed as follows:

Cypermethrin at 0.02% final should be used for spraying.

Dosing formula used for premixing are as below:

M 2V 2
V 1=
M1

Where,

V1 is the volume of stock chemical required for premixing,

M2 is the concentration for premixed chemicals,

V2 is volume of the premixed chemicals,

M1 is the concentration of stock chemical.
