Give 15 examples each and its uses of the following: igneous rocks, metamorphic rocks, and
sedimentary rocks (with picture, colored)

IGNEOUS ROCK
1. GABBRO
Crushed gabbro is utilized as a foundation material in construction projects. Crushed stone for
road building, train ballast, and anywhere a long-lasting crushed stone is required as fill.
2. DIORITE
Used as construction material of roads, buildings and also drainage stone for erosion control.

used in gemstone mining because of it has large crystal minerals.
as architectural stone.
used for rare mineral mining.

commonly used as an abrasive. Pumice is used to smooth skin or scrape up grime around the
house.

8. BASALT
used in construction (e.g. as building blocks or in the groundwork), making cobblestones (from
columnar basalt) and in making statues.

used for making tiles because it is resistant to slipping.
used as filling material in construction and road construction.
10. OBSIDIAN
has been used across history to make weapons, implements, tools, ornaments, and mirrors.
11. TUFF
has been used for construction since ancient times. Since it is common in Italy, the Romans used
it often for construction.
12. DACITE
sometimes used to produce crushed stone. It performs well as fill and as a loose aggregate in a
wide variety of construction projects.
13. KIMBERLITE
is important for delivering diamonds to the crust through magmatic intrusions that solidify into
pipelike structures.
14. SCORIA
used in landscaping and drainage works. It is also commonly used in gas barbecue grills.
15. LHERZOLITE
used in construction industry include Landscaping, Manufacture of magnesium and dolomite
refractories, Used for flooring, stair treads, borders
METAMORPHIC ROCK

1. QUARTZITE
used to cover walls, as roofing tiles, as flooring, and stairsteps. Its use for countertops in kitchens
is expanding rapidly.
2. MARBLE
used principally for buildings and monuments, interior decoration, statuary, table tops, and
novelties.
3. SLATE
has many uses such as snooker tables, roofing, gravestones, flooring and garden decorations.

used for interior and exterior spaces in buildings, walls and landscaping. Interior uses of this stone
are kitchen or bathroom countertops, decorative walls, flooring or interior decoration.
5. SCHIST
used for garden decoration, paving and sometimes sculpture.

primary use of hornfels is in architecture and beautification of the residential and industrial
building.
9. NOVACILITE
used for sharpening knives, surgical instruments, and wood-carving tools
10. MARIPOSITE
most important for being an ore of gold and a source of placer gold. It has been cut as a dimension
stone to produce cemetery markers, fireplaces, facing stone and other architectural works.
11. SOAPSTONE
offers three major benefits: heat resistance/retention, acid resistance and absorption
resistance/non-porosity. These properties enable soapstone to be used as sinks, countertops,
floors, hearths, stoves and more.
12. SKARN
Skarn deposits are economically valuable as sources of metals such as tin, tungsten, manganese,
copper, gold, zinc, lead, nickel, molybdenum and iron.
13. KHONDALITE
Khondalites weather easily but still have been used in buildings and temples, for example, the
Konark Sun Temple and Jagannath Temple.
14. SERPENTINE
used mainly as a decorative stone or for ornamental objects. Serpentine gemstones have been
used as a source of magnesium, in asbestos and for personal adornment or sculpture throughout
history.
15. AMPHIBOLITE
quarried and crushed for use as an aggregate in highway construction and as a ballast stone in
railroad construction. It is also quarried and cut for use as a dimension stone.
SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
1. SANDSTONE
liners for steel furnaces; as building stone; as an abrasive; for golf-course trap sand; and in making
glass, computer chips, fiberglass, TV screens, and paint
2. LIMESTONE
used in steel manufacturing, mining, paper production, water treatment and purification, and
plastic production.
3. SHALE
It is a source material in the ceramics industry to make brick, tile, and pottery.
Crushed and heated with limestone to make cement for the construction industry.
4. CONGLOMERATE
can be crushed to make a fine aggregate that can be used for roads and buildings in construction
industries. Conglomerates are also used in the cement manufacturing industry.
5. BRECCIA
used as architectural stones for paving stone, building stone, tiles, windowsills, and interior
building veneers.
